Development of a core outcome set (COS) for clinical effectiveness trials in esophageal cancer resection surgery. ⋯ The COS is recommended for all pragmatic clinical effectiveness trials in esophageal cancer resection surgery. Further work is needed to delineate the definitions and parameters and explore best methods for measuring the individual outcomes.

Create practice guidelines for the appropriate use of red blood cell transfusions in hepatectomy. ⋯ Based on best available evidence and expert opinion, criteria for appropriate perioperative red blood cell transfusions in hepatectomy were determined.

The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical effects of prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) in patients who underwent surgery for gastrointestinal (GI) trauma, perforation, or obstruction. ⋯ PGE1 is associated with beneficial clinical effects, such as prompt postoperative GI function recovery and reduced overall postoperative complications after emergency GI surgery, which may be attributed to a reduced inflammatory response.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether the Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program, a national program that introduced financial penalties for high readmission rates for certain medical conditions, had a "spillover" effect on surgical conditions. ⋯ Surgical readmission rates have fallen during the past decade and rates of decline have increased during the HRRP period.

To explore use of the notion of American exceptionalism by fellows of the American Surgical Association (ASA) (1880 through World War I) and how this proved instrumental in the rise of surgery in the United States. ⋯ Use of the concept of American exceptionalism by fellows of the ASA was a key factor in the development of surgery in the United States.
