Saccular Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms: Patient Characteristics, Clinical Presentation, Treatment, and Outcomes in the Netherlands.
The aim of this was to analyze differences between saccular-shaped abdominal aortic aneurysms (SaAAAs) and fusiform abdominal aortic aneurysms (FuAAAs) regarding patient characteristics, treatment, and outcome, to advise a threshold for intervention for SaAAAs. ⋯ SaAAAs become acute at smaller diameters than FuAAAs in DSAA patients. This study therefore supports the current idea that SaAAAs should be electively treated at smaller diameters than FuAAAs. The exact diameter threshold for elective treatment of SaAAAs is difficult to determine, but a diameter of 45 mm seems to be an acceptable threshold.

Anastomotic Techniques and Associated Morbidity in Total Minimally Invasive Transthoracic Esophagectomy: Results From the EsoBenchmark Database.
The aim of this study was to describe anastomotic techniques used for total minimally invasive transthoracic esophagectomy (ttMIE) and to analyze the associated morbidity. ⋯ Results of this analysis present the current status of the technical evolution of ttMIE with anastomotic leakage as predominant surgical complication. However, technique-related morbidity requires cautious interpretation considering the long learning curve of this complex surgical procedure.

The aim of this study was to determine the predictive value of machine perfusate analysis on graft outcome. ⋯ Assessment of flavin, a marker of mitochondrial complex I injury, in the perfusate provides a fast prediction of liver graft function and loss during ex situ MP before implantation. This finding may have high clinical relevance, as liver grafts from extended DBD or DCD donors carry considerable risks for recipients. On-line estimation of outcome before implantation would therefore substantially increase safe utilization of liver grafts.

Defining Global Benchmarks in Bariatric Surgery: A Retrospective Multicenter Analysis of Minimally Invasive Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass and Sleeve Gastrectomy.
To define "best possible" outcomes for bariatric surgery (BS)(Roux-en-Y gastric bypass [RYGB] and sleeve gastrectomy [SG]). ⋯ Benchmark cutoffs targeting perioperative outcomes in BS offer a new tool in surgical quality-metrics and may be implemented in quality-improvement cycle.ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier NCT03440138.

Total Versus Near-total Thyroidectomy in Graves Disease: Results of the Randomized Controlled Multicenter TONIG-trial.
Previous data suggest that the incidence of hypoparathyroidism after surgery for Graves disease (GD) is lower after subtotal thyroidectomy compared to total thyroidectomy (TT). The present study evaluated the incidence of postoperative hypoparathyroidism after near-total (NTT) versus TT in GD. ⋯ NTT for GD is not superior to TT regarding transient postoperative hypoparathyroidism.
