Sarcopenia has been identified as a prognostic factor among certain types of cancer. In esophageal cancer, patients are at increased risk of malnutrition and sarcopenia, ultimately contributing to poor outcomes. A systematic review was conducted to determine whether sarcopenia, defined by the skeletal muscle index, is predictive of overall survival, disease-free survival, and postoperative complications in resectable esophageal cancer. ⋯ Sarcopenia is a predictor of overall survival, disease-free survival, and postoperative complications in patients with resectable esophageal cancer. Studies on the modifiability of sarcopenia in the preoperative period will help determine the utility of nutritional interventions.

Effect of the Use of Reinforced Stapling on the Occurrence of Pancreatic Fistula after Distal Pancreatectomy: Results of the REPLAY Multicenter Randomized clinical trial REPLAY: REinforcement of the Pancreas in distaL pAncreatectomY.
The aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of the use of a reinforced stapler (RS) during distal pancreatectomy (DP) on postoperative outcomes. ⋯ The results of this randomized clinical trial did not favor the use of RS during DP to reduce the rate of PF.

Liver Transplantation as a New Standard of Care in Patients with Perihilar Cholangiocarcinoma? Results from an International Benchmark Study.
To define benchmark values for liver transplantation (LT) in patients with perihilar cholangiocarcinoma (PHC) enabling unbiased comparisons. ⋯ This multicenter benchmark study demonstrates that LT offers excellent outcomes with superior oncological results in early stage PHC patients, even in candidates for surgery. This provocative observation should lead to a change in available therapeutic algorithms for PHC.

A Breakthrough Improvement Collaborative Significantly Reduces Hospital Stay after Elective Colectomy for Cancer Across a Healthcare System.
This multicenter study aimed to assess (1) the effect of an improvement collaborative on enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocol adherence after elective colectomy and (2) the association between adherence and patient outcomes. ⋯ A peer-constructed improvement collaborative effectively increases adherence to an ERAS protocol in individual hospitals. Across time, length of stay and postoperative complications decreased significantly, and a dose-response relationship was observed.

The Diagnostic Efficacy of an App-based Diagnostic Health Care Application in the Emergency Room: eRadaR-Trial. A prospective, Double-blinded, Observational Study.
To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of the app-based diagnostic tool Ada and the impact on patient outcome in the emergency room (ER). ⋯ Currently, the classic patient-physician interaction is superior to an AI-based diagnostic tool applied by patients. However, AI tools have the potential to additionally benefit the diagnostic efficacy of clinicians and improve quality of care.
