We sought to quantify and characterize long-term consequences of pneumonectomy, with particular attention to nononcologic mortality. ⋯ Compared to lobectomy, excess mortality after pneumonectomy extends beyond 1 year and is driven primarily by nononcologic causes. Pneumonectomy patients require lifelong monitoring and may benefit from expeditious assessment and intervention at the initial signs of illness.

Biomarkers for the Early Diagnosis of Sepsis in Burns: Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic performance of all biomarkers studied to date for the early diagnosis of sepsis in hospitalized patients with burns. ⋯ The most widely studied biomarkers are poorly predictive for sepsis in burns patients. Brain natriuretic peptide, stroke volume index, TNF-alpha, and cell-free DNA showed promise in single studies and should be further evaluated. A standardized approach to the evaluation of diagnostic markers (including time of sampling, cut-offs, and outcomes) would be useful.

The primary objective of this study was to identify novel genes that predispose people in the Japanese population to FPC. ⋯ Our findings indicate that FPC patients harbor potentially deleterious causative germline variants in tumor suppressor genes, which are known to acquire somatic mutations in pancreatic cancer, and that somatic loss of heterozygosity of some FPC susceptibility genes may contribute to the development of FPC in the absence of somatic KRAS-activating mutation. Genetic testing for a wider variety of FPC-predisposition genes could provide better screening approach for high-risk groups of pancreatic cancer.

RAD51 Expression as a Biomarker to Predict Efficacy of Preoperative Therapy and Survival for Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma: A Large-cohort Observational Study (KSCC1307).
The aim of this study is to identify biomarkers that predict efficacy of preoperative therapy and survival for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). ⋯ In ESCC, positive RAD51 expression was identified as a useful biomarker to predict resistance to preoperative therapy and poor prognosis in patients who received preoperative CRT. Administration of preoperative chemotherapy may be warranted for patients with positive RAD51 expression.

To investigate the clinical significance of IL-10+ tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) in gastric cancer. ⋯ This study revealed that IL-10+ TAMs might drive an immunoevasive microenvironment and determine poor prognosis and inferior therapeutic responsiveness to fluorouracil-based adjuvant chemotherapy, indicating IL-10+ TAMs could be applied as a potential target for immunotherapeutic approach in gastric cancer.
