To compare different criteria for post-hepatectomy liver failure (PHLF) and evaluate the association between International Study Group of Liver Surgery (ISGLS) PHLF and the Comprehensive Complication Index (CCI)" and 90-day mortality. ⋯ In this diverse international cohort of major hepatectomies, ISGLS grade A was not associated with 90-day mortality or high CCI, calling into question the current classification of patients in this group as having clinically significant PHLF.

To investigate postoperative functional connectivity (FC) alterations across impaired cognitive domains and their causal relationships with systemic inflammation. ⋯ The decreased FC of executive control network and its anticorrelation with the default mode network may contribute to executive function deficits after cardiac surgery. Systemic inflammation may trigger these transient FC changes and executive function impairments.

This work addressing complexities in wound infection, seeks to test the reliance of bacterial pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) on host skin lipids to form biofilm with pathological consequences. ⋯ This work demonstrates that microbial pathogens must co-opt host skin lipids to unleash biofilm pathogenicity. Anti-biofilm strategies must not necessarily always target the microbe and targeting host lipids at risk of infection could be productive. This work may be viewed as a first step, laying fundamental mechanistic groundwork, toward a paradigm change in biofilm management.

The aim of this study was to visualize the postoperative clinical course using the comprehensive complication index (CCI) and to propose an early alarming sign for subsequent serious outcomes in perihilar cholangiocarcinoma. ⋯ The CCI could depict the chronological increase in the overall morbidity burden, categorized into 3 patterns. Early CCI potentially predicted sequential progression to serious outcomes.

Should Cell Salvage be Used in Liver Resection and Transplantation? A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.
To evaluate the effect of intraoperative blood cell salvage and autotransfusion (IBSA) use on red blood cell (RBC) transfusion and postoperative outcomes in liver surgery. ⋯ IBSA may reduce intraoperative allogeneic RBC transfusion without compromising oncologic outcomes. The current evidence base is limited in size and quality, and high-quality randomized controlled trials are needed.
