To provide the largest single-center analysis of islet (ITx) and pancreas (PTx) transplantation. ⋯ PTx shows higher sex-adjusted and age-adjusted mortality, procedure-related complications and readmissions compared with ITx. Conversely, insulin independence, graft survival and glycemic control are better with PTx. This study provides data to balance risks and benefits with ITx and PTx, which could improve shared decision-making.

The aim of this study was to explore beliefs and behaviors of opioid pain medications among patients undergoing elective surgery. ⋯ Patients undergoing common surgical procedures often arrive at their surgical encounter with strong, pre-formed opinions about opioids. Eliciting these preexisting opinions may help surgeons better counsel patients about safe opioid use after surgery.

The aim of this study was to explore the potential value of extended nodal-dissection following neoadjuvant chemoradiation (CRT), by analyzing data from the National Cancer Database (NCDB). ⋯ The total number of resected nodes is a significant determinant of improved survival following induction CRT in patients with either node negative or node positive disease. In the matched groups, patients with higher number of resected lymph nodes had higher OS rate, despite having more advanced pathological disease and higher number of resected positive lymph nodes.

We sought to understand the effect of sex on compensation among colorectal surgeons and to determine which factors contribute to gender-based differences in compensation. ⋯ We found a 12% adjusted sex wage gap among colorectal surgeons. Gender-based differences in leadership positions and allocation of effort may contribute. Further research will be necessary to clarify sources of wage inequalities. Still, our results should prompt expedient actions to support closing the gap.
