To develop a machine learning model that automatically quantifies the spread of blood in the surgical field using intraoperative videos of laparoscopic colorectal surgery and evaluate whether the index measured with the developed model can be used to assess tissue handling skill. ⋯ We developed a machine learning model to measure blood pixels in laparoscopic colorectal surgery images using RGB information. The blood pixel count per frame measured with this model significantly correlated with surgeons' tissue handling skills.

To discern the impact of diabetes mellitus (DM) on spinal cord injury (SCI) after open descending thoracic and thoracoabdominal aneurysm repair (DTAAAR). ⋯ DM is associated to increased OM and decreased survival, and it is an independent predictor of SCI after open DTAAAR. Strict perioperative glycemic control should be implemented, and exogenous ketones should be investigated as neuroprotective agents to reduce such adverse events.

This study aimed to characterize postpancreatectomy acute pancreatitis (PPAP) after pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) in a high-volume center. ⋯ PPAP is a distinct complication after PD with distinctive clinical outcomes. A part of PPAP presents as an inflammatory process in the early postoperative period but sometimes could lead to necrotizing pancreatitis or other severe clinical scenarios, and another part of PPAP would lead to anastomotic failure that accounts for a great proportion of POPF occurrence.
