Learning Curve of Laparoscopic Gastrectomy: A Multicenter Study.
To evaluate the learning curve of laparoscopic gastrectomy (LG) after an implementation program. ⋯ On the basis of our study of the first 108 procedures of LG in 5 high-volume centers with well-trained surgeons, no learning curve effect could be identified regarding anastomotic leakage. A learning curve effect was found with respect to overall complications and conversion rate.

The American Board of Surgery (ABS) sought to investigate the suitability of video-based assessment (VBA) as an adjunct to certification for assessing technical skills. ⋯ VBA is promising as an adjunct to the current board certification process and should be further considered by the ABS.

Perioperative anemia has been associated with increased risk of red blood cell transfusion and increased morbidity and mortality after surgery. The optimal approach to the diagnosis and management of perioperative anemia is not fully established. ⋯ Early identification and effective treatment of anemia has the potential to improve clinical outcomes in surgical patients.

We aimed to examine associations between the oral, fecal, and mucosal microbiome communities and adenoma formation. ⋯ Normal mucosa microbial abundances of adenoma formers manifest unique patterns of microbial diversity that may be predictive of adenoma formation.
