The management of acute pancreatitis (AP) is still based on speculative and unproven paradigms in many centers. Therefore, we performed an evidence-based analysis to assess the best available treatment. ⋯ While providing new insights into key aspects of AP management, this evidence-based analysis highlights the need for further clinical trials, particularly regarding the indications for antibiotic prophylaxis and surgery.

Meta Analysis Comparative Study
Laparoscopic versus open appendectomy in children: a meta-analysis.
This study aims to use meta-analysis to compare laparoscopic and open appendectomy in a pediatric population. ⋯ The results of this meta-analysis suggest that laparoscopic appendectomy in children reduces complications. However, we also see the need for further high-quality randomized trials comparing the 2 techniques, matched not only for age and sex but also for obesity and severity of appendicitis.

Review Meta Analysis
Local recurrence after hepatic radiofrequency coagulation: multivariate meta-analysis and review of contributing factors.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the factors that influence local recurrence after radiofrequency coagulation of liver tumors. ⋯ Radiofrequency coagulation by laparoscopy or laparotomy results in superior local control, independent of tumor size. The percutaneous route should mainly be reserved for patients who cannot tolerate a laparoscopy or laparotomy. The short-term benefits of less invasiveness for the percutaneous route do not outweigh the longer-term higher risk of local recurrence.

Review Meta Analysis
A systematic review of strategies to improve prophylaxis for venous thromboembolism in hospitals.
To assess the effectiveness of different strategies for increasing the uptake of prophylaxis for venous thromboembolism (VTE) in hospitalized patients through a systematic review of the literature. ⋯ Passive dissemination of guidelines is unlikely to improve VTE prophylaxis practice. A number of active strategies used together, which incorporate some method for reminding clinicians to assess patients for DVT risk and assisting the selection of appropriate prophylaxis, are likely to result in the achievement of optimal outcomes.

Meta Analysis Comparative Study
Meta-analysis of laparoscopic versus open pyloromyotomy.
To perform a meta-analysis of studies comparing open pyloromyotomy (OP) and laparoscopic pyloromyotomy (LP) in the treatment of infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis. ⋯ OP is associated with fewer complications and higher efficacy. Recovery time appears significantly shorter following LP. A prospective randomized controlled trial is warranted to fully investigate these and other outcome measures.
