Duration of Antimicrobial Prophylaxis in Patients Undergoing Major Hepatectomy With Extrahepatic Bile Duct Resection: A Randomized Controlled Trial.
To evaluate the optimal duration of antimicrobial prophylaxis in patients undergoing "complicated"' major hepatectomy with extrahepatic bile duct resection. ⋯ Two-day administration of antimicrobial prophylaxis is sufficient for patients undergoing hepatectomy with extrahepatic bile duct resection [Registration number: ID 000009800 (University Hospital Medical Information Network, http://www.umin.ac.jp)].

Personalised Prehabilitation in High-risk Patients Undergoing Elective Major Abdominal Surgery: A Randomized Blinded Controlled Trial.
The aim of this study was to assess the impact of personalized prehabilitation on postoperative complications in high-risk patients undergoing elective major abdominal surgery. ⋯ Prehabilitation enhanced postoperative clinical outcomes in high-risk candidates for elective major abdominal surgery, which can be explained by the increased aerobic capacity.

The HIPPO Trial, a Randomized Double-blind Trial Comparing Self-gripping Parietex Progrip Mesh and Sutured Parietex Mesh in Lichtenstein Hernioplasty: A Long-term Follow-up Study.
To evaluate the effect of a self-gripping mesh (Progrip) on the incidence of chronic postoperative inguinal pain (CPIP) and recurrence rate after Lichtenstein hernioplasty. ⋯ The self-gripping Progrip mesh does not reduce CPIP rates. Outcomes of the Progrip mesh are comparable to the Lichtenstein technique with the additional advantage of a reduced operation time. NCT01830452.

Randomized Controlled Trial of Two Alcohol-based Preparations for Surgical Site Antisepsis in Colorectal Surgery.
To compare 2 alcohol-based, dual-action skin preparations for surgical site infection (SSI) prevention in elective colorectal surgery. ⋯ In patients undergoing elective, clean contaminated colorectal surgery, the use of IPA failed to meet criterion for noninferiority for overall SSI prevention compared with chlorhexidine-alcohol. Photodocumentation of wounds and rigorous tracking of outcomes up to 30 days postdischarge contributed to high fidelity to current standard SSI descriptions and wound classifications.

Liver Function in Patients With Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease Randomized to Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Versus Sleeve Gastrectomy: A Secondary Analysis of a Randomized Clinical Trial.
The aim of the study was to compare the influence of sleeve gastrectomy (SG) versus Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) on liver function in bariatric patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in a randomized clinical trial (NCT01806506). ⋯ Patients with NASH undergoing RYGB are more susceptible to early transient deterioration of liver function than after SG.
