The use of S-Monovette is effective to reduce the burden of hemolysis in a large urban emergency department.
Due to the high prevalence of hemolysis in specimens received from the emergency department (ED), several strategies have been proposed to improve sample quality, but none of these seem effective to overcome the problem. In a preliminary study we showed that the use of S-Monovette blood collection system was effective to lower the risk of hemolysis in venous blood samples collected from intravenous catheters. This study was hence aimed to verify whether the replacement of a conventional vacuum system with S-Monovette may be effective to reduce the burden of hemolysis in the daily practice of a large urban ED. ⋯ Results of our study confirm that the introduction of the Sarstedt S-Monovette blood tubes has reduced the hemolysis rate in the emergency department compared to the previously used BD Vacutainer® SST II Plus plastic serum tubes.

Impaired oxidative balance and association of blood glucose, insulin and HOMA-IR index in migraine.
The nature of the relationship between glucose metabolism and occurrence of migraine has not been elucidated precisely. This study investigated the status of oxidative/antioxidative balance and its relationship with the glucose metabolism in migraineurs to get new points of view for the underlying oxidative mechanisms. ⋯ This preliminary study shows that oxidative/antioxidative balance shifts towards the oxidative status in migraine. Higher total oxidant status and elevated HOMA-IR index might play a role in the potential early pathogenesis for migraine.

ReviewFaecal calprotectin in the diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease.
Suspicion of inflammatory bowel disease should be raised in any patient with chronic or recurrent abdominal pain and diarrhoea. However, symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) overlap with functional gastrointestinal disorders and those patients may not need endoscopy. Currently, colonoscopy with multiple biopsies is considered the gold standard to establish the diagnosis of IBD. ⋯ Testing of faecal calprotectin has been highly useful to distinguish organic from functional intestinal disorders in patients with abdominal complaints. Additionally, faecal calprotectin has reliably identified colonic inflammation in patients with suspected IBD. The use of this inexpensive and widely available test in the evaluation and risk stratification in patients with abdominal complaints is likely to increase in the future.

In this paper we would like to briefly introduce readers to the situation in the field of laboratory medicine in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with a focus on training in the field of medical biochemistry. As in some of neighboring countries, term Medical biochemist is the usual name for the Clinical biochemist or Clinical chemist in Bosnia and Herzegovina. ⋯ A single law on the state level would provide us with more defined and precise answers, such as: who can get a specialization, how long should last the training for medical biochemistry specialists (duration in years). This law should be in consent with the program described in EC4 or other documents given by the EFCC (European Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine) and IFCC (International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine).

Multicenter StudyHemolysis from a nurses' standpoint--survey from four Croatian hospitals.
Hemolysis can occur during sample collection, handling and transport. It is more frequent when the non-laboratory staff performs sampling. The aim of this study was to assess nurses' knowledge on the causes of hemolysis and consequential impact on the laboratory tests results. Additionally, the differences in knowledge, related to work experience, professional degree and previous education about hemolysis were explored. ⋯ Croatian nurses are familiar with the definition of hemolysis, but a lack of knowledge about causes and influence on laboratory test results is evident. Nurses are eager to improve their knowledge in this field of preanalytical phase.
