Associations between alcohol outlets and emergency department injury presentations: effects of distance from the central business district.
To examine the effects of licensed outlets and sales on levels of alcohol-related injuries presenting to emergency departments (EDs) in the Inner, Middle and Outer postcode zones of Perth, Australia. ⋯ These findings provide further evidence to support stronger controls on liquor licensing, and indicate the need for different controls according to the location and type of licence.

Comparative StudyResponding to heatwave intensity: Excess Heat Factor is a superior predictor of health service utilisation and a trigger for heatwave plans.
To determine which measures of heatwave have the greatest predictive power for increases in health service utilisation in Perth, Western Australia. ⋯ The findings suggest that the EHF formula is well suited for use as a means of activating heatwave plans and identifies the required level of response to extreme heatwave events as well as moderate heatwave events that produce excess health service demand.

To examine national trampoline injury patterns and trends in the context of improved product safety standards and trampoline design modifications. ⋯ History provides no evidence of an observable effect of voluntary Australian Standards for trampoline safety on population rates for trampoline injury. The major design modification--netted enclosures--could contribute to the risk of injury by leading parents to falsely believe that a netted enclosure eradicates the risk of injury.

To estimate the proportion and numbers of cancers in Australia in 2010 attributable to consuming red/processed meat. ⋯ Reducing red/processed meat intake may reduce colorectal cancer incidence, but must be balanced against nutritional benefits of modest lean meat consumption.
