Budesonide/formoterol maintenance and reliever therapy in asthma control: acute, dose-related effects and real-life effectiveness.
The efficacy of budesonide/formoterol maintenance and reliever therapy (BFMRT) in asthma control is well documented in large randomized controlled trials. However, the acute reliever effects and real-life effectiveness are seldom reported. ⋯ Budesonide/formoterol as reliever exerts acute, dose-related anti-inflammatory effects and FEV1 improvement in symptomatic asthmatics. BFMRT is effective in asthma control. However, the decrease in long-term follow-up rate remains an issue to overcome in real-life settings.

Clinical course and prognostic factors of pulmonary aspergilloma.
There is limited data on size change during natural progression of pulmonary aspergilloma. We aimed at elucidating the clinical course and prognosis of aspergilloma according to its size change. ⋯ A significant portion of pulmonary aspergilloma changed size in our population. The prevalence of clinically significant haemoptysis was associated with absolute size of cavity and mass of aspergilloma.

Long-term adherence with non-invasive ventilation improves prognosis in obese COPD patients.
Long-term non-invasive ventilation (NIV) has become a widespread modality of treatment in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients with chronic respiratory failure. However, benefits in terms of patient-related outcomes are still under debate. Both NIV adherence and heterogeneous responses in different COPD phenotypes may contribute to the difficulty of demonstrating NIV benefits. Our aim was to assess the impact of NIV adherence on the rate of hospitalization for acute exacerbation and death. ⋯ Adherence to NIV was associated with better prognosis only in obese COPD. NIV use > 9 h/day predicted poor outcomes.

Diagnostic performance comparison of the Chartis System and high-resolution computerized tomography fissure analysis for planning endoscopic lung volume reduction.
Endobronchial valve (EBV) therapy is optimized in patients who demonstrate little or no collateral ventilation (CV). The accuracy of the Chartis System and visual assessment of high-resolution computerized tomography (HRCT) fissure completeness by a core radiology laboratory for classifying CV status was compared by evaluating the relationship of each method with target lobe volume reduction (TLVR) after EBV placement. ⋯ When evaluating patients for likelihood of successful EBV therapy, the Chartis System CV assessment and HRCT fissure analysis appear to have comparable accuracy. Both techniques were found to be beneficial for EBV procedure planning.

Effect of once-daily indacaterol in a predominantly Chinese population with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: a 26-week Asia-Pacific study.
This study, in a predominantly Chinese population, investigated the efficacy and safety of a once-daily (o.d.) inhaled ultra-long-acting β2 -agonist indacaterol for the treatment of moderate-to-severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). ⋯ Indacaterol delivered effective bronchodilation with significant improvements in breathlessness and health status in this predominantly Chinese population.
