Do preoperative statins reduce atrial fibrillation after coronary artery bypass grafting?
Recent studies have demonstrated that statins have pleiotropic effects, including anti-inflammatory effects and atrial fibrillation (AF) preventive effects. The objective of this study was to assess the efficacy of preoperative statin therapy in preventing AF after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). ⋯ Our study indicated that preoperative statin therapy seems to reduce AF development after CABG.

Comparative StudyCystatin C in diabetics as a marker of mild renal insufficiency after CABG.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of plasma cystatin C in acute impairment in renal function; plasma cystatin C was compared to plasma creatinine in two hundred patients undergoing elective CABG surgery. ⋯ Cystatin C and cystatin C-based estimation of GFR may be useful and more sensitive than creatinine in detecting mild acute renal insufficiency in diabetic patients.

Lung metastasectomy for colorectal carcinoma in patients with a history of hepatic metastasis.
We reviewed resection of pulmonary metastases preformed by the Department of Thoracic Surgery at Kyoto University Hospital to confirm the clinical significance of this surgery in patients with colorectal carcinoma and a history of hepatic metastasis. ⋯ Aggressive resection of pulmonary metastases in a select group of colorectal cancer patients with a history of liver metastases might result in prolonged survival.

Surgery offers high cure rates in multidrug-resistant tuberculosis.
Drug resistance has become a major problem in the treatment of tuberculosis, and pulmonary resection in combination with chemotherapy appears to be an effective measure for the treatment. The purpose of this study was to investigate the results of resection for multidrug-resistant pulmonary tuberculosis (MDR-TB). ⋯ Even with high morbidity in the early post-operative period, surgery, in addition to medical therapy, offers higher cure rates than only medical therapy; however, meticulous preoperative evaluation of patients is needed.

Ki-67 labeling index is associated with recurrence after segmentectomy under video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery in stage I non-small cell lung cancer.
Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) segmentectomy for small or early stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) remains controversial. Here, we investigated the clinical importance of predicting recurrence by Ki-67 in VATS segmentectomy for stage I NSCLC. ⋯ Ki-67 LI after VATS segmentectomy was a prognostic factor of disease-free survival in NSCLC and the treatment of choice for patients with positive LI may be considered, in addition to adjuvant chemotherapy, or lobectomy.
