Multicenter StudyAn ethnographic study of barriers to and enabling factors for tuberculosis treatment adherence in Timor Leste.
Tuberculosis (TB) is a major public health problem in Timor Leste; treatment adherence was identified by the National TB Control Programme (NTP) as an impediment to TB control. ⋯ Local cultural practices and knowledge as well as socio-economic factors contribute to less than optimal adherence to TB treatment. This study has assisted Timor Leste's NTP in modifying its DOTS expansion strategies to overcome barriers to treatment completion.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Comparative StudyRandomised controlled trial of isoniazid preventive therapy in South African adults with advanced HIV disease.
Tuberculosis (TB) preventive therapy is not effective in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infected adults with negative tuberculin skin tests (TSTs). However, there are insufficient data on patients with advanced HIV disease from high TB incidence areas. ⋯ We did not find any association between INH preventive therapy and reductions in incident TB among TST-negative adults with advanced HIV disease, but the study had limited statistical power. High levels of adherence were observed with patient-nominated supervisors.

Multicenter StudyDrug-resistant tuberculosis in human immunodeficiency virus infected persons in Italy. The Italian Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis Study Group.
To describe the prevalence and epidemiological-clinical characteristics of tuberculosis (TB) resistance to first-line drugs in Italian human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected subjects. ⋯ As drug-resistant tuberculosis in Italy is thus far relatively scarce, detection of a large MDR-TB epidemic among HIV-infected subjects was alarming. Aggressive control measures are urgently needed to prevent the spread of MDR-TB throughout the country and among the general population.
