Controlled Clinical Trial
Effect of body mass index on the ED50 volume of bupivacaine 0.5% for supraclavicular brachial plexus block.
The aim of this study was to determine whether the ED(50) dose of bupivacaine 0.5% for supraclavicular brachial plexus block increases with increasing body mass index (BMI). ⋯ Our study demonstrates that the ED(50) of bupivacaine 0.5% does not increase with an increase in BMI. We found evidence of a possible inverse relationship between ED(50) and BMI.

Critical illness leading to prolonged length of stay (LOS) in an intensive care unit (ICU) is associated with significant mortality and resource utilization. This study assessed the independent effect of ICU LOS on in-hospital and long-term mortality after hospital discharge. ⋯ LOS in ICU was not an independent risk factor for in-hospital mortality, but it had a small effect on long-term mortality after hospital discharge after adjustment for other risk factors.

Orthotopic liver transplantation can be associated with haemorrhage, particularly in patients with severe liver dysfunction. We assessed the value of rotation thromboelastometry (ROTEM) to monitor coagulation in the operating theatre, its correlation with routine laboratory findings, and its ability to guide platelet (Plt) and fibrinogen (Fg) transfusion. ⋯ ROTEM is useful for the global assessment of coagulation in the operating theatre. EXTEM was the most informative for assessing the whole coagulation process and A10 showed value in guiding Plt and Fg transfusion.
