Population pharmacokinetics of ϵ-aminocaproic acid in adolescents undergoing posterior spinal fusion surgery.
Despite demonstrated efficacy of ϵ-aminocaproic acid (EACA) in reducing blood loss in adolescents undergoing spinal fusion, there are no population-specific pharmacokinetic data to guide dosing. The aim of this study was to determine the pharmacokinetics of EACA in adolescents undergoing spinal fusion surgery and make dosing recommendations. ⋯ NCT01408823.

Classic teaching suggests that diminished availability of oxygen leads to increased tissue oxygen extraction yet evidence to support this notion in the context of hypoxaemia, as opposed to anaemia or cardiac failure, is limited. ⋯ In acclimatized individuals at 4559 m, there was a decline in maximum absolute C(a-v)O2 during exercise but no alteration in OER calculated using central venous oxygen measurements. This suggests that oxygen extraction may have become limited after exposure to 7-8 days of hypoxaemia.

There is considerable interest in oxygen partial pressure (Po2) monitoring in physiology, and in tracking Po2 changes dynamically when it varies rapidly. For example, arterial Po2 ([Formula: see text]) can vary within the respiratory cycle in cyclical atelectasis (CA), where [Formula: see text] is thought to increase and decrease during inspiration and expiration, respectively. A sensor that detects these [Formula: see text] oscillations could become a useful diagnostic tool of CA during acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). ⋯ We conclude that these fibreoptic [Formula: see text] sensors have the potential to become a diagnostic tool for CA in ARDS.
