Influence of transactive memory on perceived performance, job satisfaction and identification in anaesthesia teams.
There is an increasing awareness in the medical community that human factors are involved in effectiveness of anaesthesia teams. Communication and coordination between physicians and nurses seems to play a crucial role in maintaining a good level of performance under time pressure, particularly for anaesthesia teams, who are confronted with uncertainty, rapid changes in the environment, and multi-tasking. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between a specific form of implicit coordination--the transactive memory system--and perceptions of team effectiveness and work attitudes such as job satisfaction and team identification. ⋯ These findings provided empirical evidence of the existence of a transactive memory system among real anaesthesia teams, and highlight the need to investigate whether transactive memory is actually linked with objective measures of performance.

Perioperative tobacco use interventions in Japan: a survey of thoracic surgeons and anaesthesiologists.
Tobacco use interventions in surgical patients who smoke could benefit both their short-term outcome and long-term health. Anaesthesiologists and surgeons can play key roles in delivering these interventions. This study determined the practices, attitudes, and beliefs of these physicians regarding tobacco use interventions in Japan. ⋯ Although current rates of intervention provided by anaesthesiologists and surgeons are low, there is considerable interest among these physicians in learning more about interventions. Given the relatively high prevalence of smoking in Japan and the potential for surgery to serve as a 'teachable moment' to promote abstinence from smoking, leadership by these specialists in the area of tobacco control could have a major impact on public health in Japan.

National survey of College Tutors in the UK regarding training in medical education.
College Tutors are responsible for the organization of training and should possess the pre-requisite knowledge and skills to facilitate this. ⋯ This survey highlights that training in medical education for College Tutors is inadequate. It is the responsibility of the Colleges and the Postgraduate Deans to ensure College Tutors are supported appropriately to develop the knowledge and skills required for the role.

Sevoflurane preconditioning at 1 MAC only provides limited protection in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass surgery: a randomized bi-centre trial.
Volatile agents can mimic ischaemic preconditioning leading to a decrease in myocardial infarct size. The present study investigated if a 15 min sevoflurane administration before cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) has a cardioprotective effect in patients undergoing coronary surgery. ⋯ This study did not show a significant preconditioning signal after 15 min of sevoflurane administration. The 15 min duration might be too short or the concentration of sevoflurane too low to induce cardioprotection detected by troponin I levels.

Enjoying work or burdened by it? How anaesthetists experience and handle difficulties at work: a qualitative study.
The aim of this study was to explore difficulties at work from anaesthetists' own perspective and to examine how anaesthetists handle and cope with situations that are perceived as difficult and potentially stressful. ⋯ The anaesthetists interviewed in this study maintained that they enjoyed work and could see no external obstacles to doing a good job. They had arrived at a reconciliation of their work with its inherent difficulties and problems. Getting access to their coping strategies might help young anaesthetists to come to terms with their work.
