Randomized Controlled TrialDoes heated erythrocyte suspension transfusion with medical devices containing phthalates increase DEHP and MEHP levels?
It is commonly known that stored blood and blood products are heated before transfusion to prevent hypothermia, which leads to increased di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) content leaching into the blood and blood products and thereby causes greater conversion of DEHP to mono (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (MEHP). However, there has been no study in the literature reporting on the amount of toxic phthalates in blood following the erythrocyte suspension (ES) transfused via warming. In this study, we aimed to investigate the DEHP and MEHP content in blood following the heated ES transfusions administered by DEHP-containing and DEHP-free infusion sets. ⋯ DEHP-containing products lead to toxicity. Therefore, using DEHP-free medical devices may prevent toxicity in patients undergoing ES transfusion.

Randomized Controlled TrialEffect of Flaxseed Consumption on Central Obesity, Serum Lipids, and Adiponectin Level in Overweight or Obese Women: A Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial.
Flaxseed may be beneficial for the management of obesity due to its high content of alpha-linolenic acid, fibre, and lignans. ⋯ Flaxseed consumption may improve adiposity markers, such as adiponectin level. Thus, flaxseed consumption could be an adjunctive therapy to attenuate central obesity. Serum lipid profile has not changed meaningfully after flaxseed consumption.

Randomized Controlled TrialDoes the power of the laser devices matter for a successful HoLEP procedure? A prospective comparative study.
The objectives of this prospective study were to evaluate the efficiency, safety and applicability of medium-power (MP) holmium laser devices in the endoscopic enucleation of the enlarged prostate (HoLEP) compared with high-power (HP) laser devices. ⋯ Our comparative study indicated that HoLEP can be performed safely and effectively with MP laser devices without any technical difficulties and with comparable results achieved in HP laser devices.

Prognostic accuracy of Quick SOFA in older adults hospitalized with community acquired urinary tract infection.
Quick [Sepsis-related] Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (qSOFA) is a prognostic score based on sepsis-3 definition, easy to carry out, whose application has been studied in older adults with sepsis from different sources and respiratory sepsis. However, to date no study has analysed its prognostic accuracy in older adults admitted to hospital with community urinary tract infection. ⋯ qSOFA showed a better predictive prognostic accuracy than SIRS and similar to SOFA in older adults admitted to hospital with community acquired urinary tract infection, having the advantage of not requiring laboratory tests.

Prevalence of metabolic syndrome and its correlation with sexual dysfunction in adult psychiatric patients treated with psychotropics in a tertiary care hospital.
In the past two decades, there has been a profound increase in the incidence of metabolic disorders among the general population, and psychotropics are also said to play a major role in the development of metabolic syndrome. ⋯ From this current study, it may be concluded that the psychiatric population is at risk for developing MetS, and the use of atypical antipsychotics (olanzapine, risperidone), anti-anxiety agent (buspirone) and clinical depression is significantly associated with metabolic syndrome. Hence, the metabolic function of psychiatric patients must be regularly assessed for early detection and management of any metabolic abnormalities. The study did not find a significant correlation between SD and MetS in psychiatric patients.
