Review Meta AnalysisAntibiotic de-escalation in patients with pneumonia in the intensive care unit: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Antibiotic de-escalation is part of an antibiotic stewardship strategy to achieve adequate therapy for infections while avoiding the prolonged use of broad-spectrum antibiotics. However, there is a paucity of clinical evidence on the clinical impact of this strategy in pneumonia patients in the intensive care unit (ICU). This review aimed to evaluate the impact of antibiotic de-escalation therapy for adult patients diagnosed with pneumonia in the ICU. ⋯ This review highlights the need for more rigorous studies to be carried out before a firm conclusion on the benefit of de-escalation therapy is supported.

Review Meta AnalysisGlobal improvement with cariprazine in the treatment of bipolar I disorder and schizophrenia: A pooled post hoc analysis.
Global rating scale measures are useful for assessing the clinical relevance of patient change. Cariprazine, a dopamine D3 and D2 receptor partial agonist, is FDA-approved for the adult treatment of acute manic/mixed episodes of bipolar I disorder and schizophrenia. Post hoc evaluations of Clinical Global Impressions-Severity (CGI-S) scores from the cariprazine pivotal trials in both indications were conducted. ⋯ Post hoc analyses showed that more cariprazine- than placebo-treated patients with bipolar mania or schizophrenia had statistically significant and clinically meaningful CGI-S improvement.

Review Meta AnalysisEfficacy of AMC/DCBA lozenges for sore throat: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Lozenges containing Amylmetacresol and 2,4-Dichlorobenzylalcohol (AMC/DCBA, eg Strepsils® ) are marketed as a remedy for acute sore throat. This over-the-counter formulation has antiseptic and local anaesthetic qualities. ⋯ Lozenges with AMC/DCBA can be a safe treatment option to relieve pain in patients with uncomplicated sore throat looking for local treatment options and valuing the modest additional effect compared with non-medicated lozenges. Review Meta AnalysisSoft drink intake and the risk of metabolic syndrome: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
It is unclear whether consumption of sugar- or artificially sweetened beverages is independently associated with the development of metabolic syndrome. A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed to evaluate whether soft drink consumption is associated with the development of metabolic syndrome. ⋯ Sugar-sweetened beverage and ASB intake are both associated with metabolic syndrome. This association may be driven by the fact that soft drink intake serves as a surrogate for an unhealthy lifestyle, or an adverse cardiovascular risk factor profile.

Review Meta AnalysisAssociation of coffee consumption and chronic kidney disease: A meta-analysis.
The risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in individuals who regularly drink coffee is controversial. The aim of this meta-analysis was to evaluate the association between coffee consumption and CKD. ⋯ Our study demonstrates no significant association between coffee consumption and CKD in males. However, future studies are required to assess a potential inverse association between coffee consumption and risk for developing CKD in females.
