Longitudinal outcome evaluations of interdisciplinary multimodal pain treatment programs for patients with chronic primary musculoskeletal pain: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
Although Interdisciplinary Multimodal Pain Treatment (IMPT) programmes share a biopsychosocial approach to increase the wellbeing of patients with chronic pain, substantial variation in content and duration have been reported. In addition, it is unclear to what extent any favourable health outcomes are maintained over time. Therefore, our first aim was to identify and analyse the change over time of patient-related outcome measures in cohorts of patients who participated in IMPT programmes. Our second aim was to acquire insight into the heterogeneity of IMPT programmes. ⋯ The current study provides insight into the different existing approaches regarding the dose and content of IMPT programs. This analysis contributes to an increased understanding of the various approaches by which a biopsychosocial perspective on chronic pain can be translated to treatment programs. Furthermore, despite theoretical and empirical assertions regarding the difficulty to maintain newly learned health behaviors over time, the longitudinal analysis of health outcomes did not find a relapse pattern for patients who participated in IMPT programs.

Pain Relief by Movement Representation Strategies: An Umbrella and Mapping Review with Meta-Meta-Analysis of Motor Imagery, Action Observation and Mirror Therapy.
To develop a mapping and umbrella review with a meta-meta-analysis (MMA) to critically evaluate the current evidence of motor imagery (MI), action observation and mirror therapy (MT) on pain intensity. ⋯ This umbrella review analysed systematic reviews evaluating movement representation techniques, with the aim of synthesizing the available evidence regarding motor imagery, action observation and mirror therapy on pain. The results provide relevant information about the potential clinical use of movement representation techniques in different types of patients with painful conditions.

Are mindfulness treatments effective for pain in cancer patients? A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) have been recently applied in pain management and cancer care. However, inconsistencies exist concerning the effectiveness of MBIs on pain control among cancer patients. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the efficacy of MBIs on pain in cancer patients via a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs). ⋯ The effect of MBIs on pain in cancer patients was demonstrated in our analysis, albeit with small effect sizes. High-quality RCTs are needed to verify the efficacy of MBIs on cancer patients or survivors with pain complaints. Future trials should take into account the specific pain outcome measures (pain intensity or pain interference), the approach of intervention provision (clinic-based or remote MBI, group or individual practice), the duration and frequency of interventions and the comparators (passive or active control arms).

Transcutaneous electrical stimulation in neck pain: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
The objective of this systematic review was to investigate the effectiveness of electrical stimulation (ES) for neck pain (NP). ⋯ Electrical stimulation seems to be effective for improving pain intensity, immediately post-treatment in people with neck pain, mainly as an adjunct therapeutic modality. Nevertheless, high-quality RCTs are still needed to investigate the efficacy of electrical stimulation in neck pain.

Long-term opioid treatment and endocrine measures in chronic non-cancer pain patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Long-term opioid treatment (L-TOT) of chronic non-cancer pain (CNCP) patients has been suspected to alter the endocrine system. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed at investigating the published evidence of L-TOT effects on the endocrine system in adult CNCP patients. ⋯ This systematic review and meta-analysis suggested that long-term opioid treatment may suppress the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, and result in lower insulin levels and alter the glucocorticoid adrenal axis in adult chronic non-cancer pain patients. This adds to the need of more research of both clinical and paraclinical outcomes and their association when initiating and maintaining long-term opioid treatment.
