Vagal nerve stimulation (VNS) has become established as an effective tool for the management of various neurologic disorders. Consequently, a growing number of VNS studies have been published over the past four decades. This study presents a bibliometric analysis investigating the current trends in VNS literature. ⋯ VNS may serve as a promising intervention for rehabilitation beyond neurologic applications, with an expanding base of literature over the past two decades. Although epilepsy researchers have produced most current literature, other fields have begun to explore VNS as a potential treatment, likely owing to the rise of noninvasive forms of VNS.

Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) is a promising treatment option for migraines. This study aims to investigate the modulation effects of different taVNS frequencies along the central vagus nerve pathway in migraineurs. ⋯ 1-Hz and 20-Hz taVNS may modulate the sFC and dFC of key nodes in the central vagus nerve pathway differently. Our findings highlight the importance of stimulation parameters (frequencies) in taVNS treatment.

Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is known to be an effective long-term treatment option for chronic neuropathic pain. Subcutaneous stimulation (SubQ) is increasingly used to treat chronic back and neck pain, but long-term outcomes are unclear. ⋯ SubQ seems not to provide substantial long-term pain relief for back and neck pain because most patients abandoned their stimulation therapy.

Electroacupuncture (EA) is a traditional Chinese therapeutic technique that has a beneficial effect on neuropathic pain; however, the specific mechanism remains unclear. In this study, we investigated whether EA inhibits spinal Ca/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKIIα) phosphorylation through Sirtuin 3 (SIRT3) protein, thus relieving neuropathic pain. ⋯ Our results showed that CaMKIIα phosphorylation was inhibited by spinal SIRT3 in neuropathic pain and that EA attenuated CCI-induced neuropathic pain mainly by upregulating spinal SIRT3 expression in the SDH of mice.

This work aimed to study the effect of noninvasive vagus nerve stimulation on severe restless legs syndrome (RLS) resistant to pharmacotherapy. ⋯ In this pilot study, tVNS improved the symptoms of RLS in 66% of participants (10/15) with severe pharmacoresistant RLS, with concomitant improvements in quality of life and mood. Randomized controlled trials evaluating therapeutic efficacy of tVNS in RLS are needed to confirm these promising findings.
