Review Comparative Study[Water-electrolyte and acid-base balance in surgery. Problems in the postoperative period].
In addition to metabolic conditions, water-electrolyte and acid-base balance in the postoperative period are of major importance for the success of surgery. The principal water-electrolyte changes (hyperhydration and hypotonic dehydration, hypertonic dehydration, "third space" syndrome, etc.) and acid-base (acidosis, and metabolic and respiratory alkalosis) disorders are briefly described as they are observed in the postoperative period together with their pathophysiologic mechanisms and therapy. The identification and correction of these changes may avoid the onset of patterns due to reduced therapeutic surveillance.

Comparative Study[The utility of a classification scale of lumbar pain for the diagnosis of the fibromyalgia syndrome].
To help fibromyalgia syndrome's diagnosis, the authors propose the use of Back Pain Classification Scale (BPCS), verbal test for pain analysis, able to distinguish between organic and functional disease. Two-hundred patients suspected for fibromyalgia and forty controls completed the questionnaire and so it was possible correctly to distinguish patients with organic disease from those affected by fibromyalgia. The authors conclude that BPCS can represent a useful tool for fibromyalgia diagnosis.

[Medical emergencies in oncology: hypercalcemia. II. Diagnosis and therapy].
The acute metabolic abnormalities associated with cancer may cause symptoms that require urgent medical treatment and may constitute a more dangerous threat to life than the cancer itself. Hypercalcaemia is probably the most common metabolic complication of neoplastic disease (occurring in up to 30% of cancer patients) and its timely treatment may often save the patient and may permit subsequent chemotherapy. In this communication we focused our attention on the pathogenetic mechanism (part 1), diagnosis and subsequent treatment of this metabolic disorder (part 2).

The author discusses several pathologic conditions which may occur as acute metabolic complications of diabetes mellitus. Prior to the introduction of insulin in the management of the disease, these complications were the principal causes of mortality in diabetic patients.
