Clinical monitoring and technology are at the heart of anesthesiology, and new technological developments will help to define how anesthesiology will evolve as a profession. Anesthesia related research published in the JCMC in 2018 mainly pertained to ICU sedation with inhaled agents, anesthesia workstation technology, and monitoring of different aspects of depth of anesthesia.

Comparative StudyComparison between pulse wave velocities measured using Complior and measured using Biopac.
Arterial stiffness is a reliable prognostic parameter for cardiovascular diseases. The effect of change in arterial stiffness can be measured by the change of the pulse wave velocity (PWV). The Complior system is widely used to measure PWV between the carotid and radial arteries by means of piezoelectric clips placed around the neck and the wrist. ⋯ Correlation values and Bland-Altman plots showed that despite the difference in PWV magnitudes obtained by the two systems the measurements did agree well. Which implies that as long as the differences in PWV magnitudes are taken into account, either system could be used to measure PWV changes over time. However, when basing diagnosis on absolute PWV values, one should be very much aware of how the PWV was measured and with what system.

Risk factors for positioning-related somatosensory evoked potential changes in 3946 spinal surgeries.
The goal of this study was to evaluate the risk factors associated with positioning-related SSEP changes (PRSC). The study investigated the association between 18 plausible risk factors and the occurrence of intraoperative PRSC. Risk factors investigated included demographic variables, comorbidities, and procedure related variables. ⋯ Three surgical situations were associated with PRSC including abnormal baselines (p < 0.001), patients in the "superman" position (p < 0.001), and patients in surgical procedures that extended over 200 min (p = 0.03). Patients with higher BMIs and who are undergoing spinal surgery longer than 200 min, with abnormal baselines, must be positioned with meticulous attention. Gender, hypertension, and smoking were also found to be risk factors from their odds ratios.
