Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Comparative StudyLaparoscopic sigmoid resection for diverticular disease has no advantages over open approach: midterm results of a randomized controlled trial.
Elective laparoscopic sigmoid resection (LSR) for symptomatic diverticular disease is supposed to have significant short-term advantages compared to open surgery (open sigmoid resection (OSR)). This opinion is rather based on inferences from trials on colonic resections for malignant diseases or minor laparoscopic surgery. This randomized controlled trial was conducted to compare quality of life as well as morbidity and clinical outcome after LSR vs. OSR following a midterm follow-up period. ⋯ LSR was not superior to OSR regarding postoperative quality of life and incidence of complications in this trial.

Randomized Controlled TrialAppendicitis score for children with suspected appendicitis. A randomized clinical trial.
Appendicectomy is often performed without certainty of diagnosis. We have previously constructed and validated a diagnostic score for acute appendicitis in children. The purpose of this prospective study was to determine whether diagnosis by using the appendicitis score may improve clinical outcomes for children with suspected appendicitis. ⋯ The use of the appendicitis score can reduce the unnecessary appendicectomy rate in general surgeons treating children with suspected appendicitis.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyThe effectiveness of FloSeal matrix hemostatic agent in thyroid surgery: a prospective, randomized, control study.
The objective of this study was to compare the effectiveness of FloSeal matrix hemostatic agent with hemostatic surgical procedures and Tabotamp in thyroid surgery. ⋯ FloSeal matrix is an effective additional agent to conventional haemostatic procedures in thyroid surgery.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyProcalcitonin (PCT)-guided algorithm reduces length of antibiotic treatment in surgical intensive care patients with severe sepsis: results of a prospective randomized study.
Adequate indication and duration of administration are central issues of modern antibiotic treatment in intensive care medicine. The biochemical variable procalcitonin (PCT) is known to indicate systemically relevant bacterial infections with high accuracy. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the clinical usefulness of PCT for guiding antibiotic treatment in surgical intensive care patients with severe sepsis. ⋯ Monitoring of PCT is a helpful tool for guiding antibiotic treatment in surgical intensive care patients with severe sepsis. This may contribute to an optimized antibiotic regimen with beneficial effects on microbial resistances and costs in intensive care medicine.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyQuality of life after multiple trauma: the effect of early onset psychotherapy on quality of life in trauma patients.
The aim of this study was to improve health-related quality of life (HRQOL) related to depression, anxiety, pain, physical functioning and social aspects for severely injured trauma survivors by early onset cognitive behavioural therapy applied on the surgical ward. ⋯ Early onset cognitive therapy is not effective in improving overall HRQOL of severely injured patients but shows promising effects on depression and anxiety up to 12 months after trauma.
