Synergistic interaction between total glucosides and total flavonoids on chronic constriction injury induced neuropathic pain in rats.
Shaoyao Gancao Decoction (SGD), a famous herbal medicine, consists of two herbs (Paeoniae Radix and Glycyrrhizae Radix) and is traditionally used for the treatment of pain. ⋯ Analgesic effects of SGD may contribute to simultaneous inhibition of Sirt1 overexpression and could warrant further evaluation as a possible agent for the treatment of neuropathic pain.

Investigation of STW 5 (Iberogast®) preventive effects in experimental sepsis.
STW 5 (Iberogast(®)) is a well known herbal combination drug containing glycosides and flavonoids for which multiple pharmacological properties have been shown. ⋯ It appears that STW 5, which has a pronounced efficacy in functional gastro-intestinal diseases, has no effect on septic liver and lung damage in the CLP rat model.

Protective effect of curcumin against cardiac dysfunction in sepsis rats.
The heart is one of the target organs susceptible to attack by sepsis, and protection of the cardiac function in sepsis or alleviation dysfunction caused by sepsis appears a serious and urgent problem. ⋯ In conclusion, the results from the present study demonstrate that curcumin has the protective effects on cardiac function in rats with sepsis and curcumin could be considered as an effective and safe therapeutic agent for the management of sepsis induced cardiac dysfunction.

Synergistic and cytotoxic action of indole alkaloids produced from elicited cell cultures of Catharanthus roseus.
Catharanthus roseus (L.) G. Don (Apocynaceae) is a medicinal plant that produces more than 130 alkaloids, with special attention given to the production of the anti-hypertensive monomeric indole alkaloids, serpentine and ajmalicine, and the antitumor dimeric alkaloids, vinblastine and vincristine. ⋯ The results confirm that the powerful antitumor activity of this indole alkaloid-enriched bioactive extract is not due to the effect of a single compound but depends on the synergistic action of the four compounds identified.

Comparative StudyIn vivo and in vitro hemostatic activity of Chromolaena odorata leaf extract.
Chromolaena odorata (L.) R.M.King & H.Rob. (Asteraceae) or Siam weed has long been used to stop bleeding in Thailand and many countries. Only the aqueous leaf extract was investigated in in vivo and there have been conflicting results of in vitro hemostatic mechanisms of this plant. ⋯ The in vivo study with rats confirmed the significant ability of this plant extract to stop bleeding. However, the sufficient amount of calcium and active compounds which are aggregating and clotting agents to enhance blood coagulation and platelet aggregation in in vitro tests should be further studied.
