ReviewAdvances in the therapy of hyperoxia-induced lung injury: findings from animal models.
Oxygen therapy is one of the most widely used clinical interventions to counteract insufficient pulmonary oxygen delivery in patients with severe lung injury. However, prolonged exposure to hyperoxia at elevated partial pressure leads to inflammation and acute lung injury. ⋯ In this paper, we briefly summarized the advances in the therapies of hyperoxia-induced lung injury on the basis of its pathogenesis. We hope our summary will help provide evidence for further investigation of therapeutic measures for hyperoxia-induced lung injury.

Decompression sickness cases treated with recompression therapy between 1963 and 1998 in Turkey: review of 179 cases.
The purpose of this study was to review the cases diagnosed as decompression sickness (DCS) with recompression therapy treament between 1963 and 1998 in Turkey. The records of 179 cases were analyzed for age, gender, type of DCS, presenting signs and symptoms, time to onset of symptoms, time to recompression therapy, recompression table used, total number of treatments and outcomes. The diving depth on the day of injury ranged between 60 and 215 fsw (18 and 65 msw). ⋯ Healing rate was 68% with the air recompression tables and 86% with the oxygen tables. Repetitive dives were associated with a higher incidence of Type II DCS than single dives (79% and 66%, respectively). The results using recompression tables with oxygen were more successful than the treatment with air tables.

We evaluated the Hospira Plum A+ (HB) hyperbaric infusion pump under monoplace and multiplace hyperbaric conditions to test pump flow accuracy. ⋯ This infusion pump can be useful in hyperbaric medicine departments that treat patients who need intravenous infusions. Tubing compliance may affect fluid volumes delivered by the pump, especially when delivery rates are low. Careful monitoring of patients with low volume infusions during monoplace chamber compression and decompression is advised.

Comparative Study Observational StudyIntensive rehabilitation combined with HBO2 therapy in children with cerebral palsy: a controlled longitudinal study.
The present study aimed to assess the effect of intensive rehabilitation combined with hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) therapy on gross motor function in children with cerebral palsy (CP). ⋯ The eight-month-long benefits we have observed with combined treatments vs. rehabilitation can only have been due to a beneficial effect of hyperbaric treatment.

Review Case ReportsFrostbite of both first digits of the foot treated with delayed hyperbaric oxygen:a case report and review of literature.
Frostbite is an uncommon event that can occur from exposure to temperatures below -4 degrees C and can lead to potential serious tissue damage and necrosis. This in turn can result in debilitating amputations in otherwise healthy people. The pathophysiological mechanisms of frostbite have marked similarities to those seen in thermal burns, ischemia/reperfusion injuries and crush injuries--i.e., non-healing wounds and inflammatory processes. These injuries are commonly treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy. ⋯ Based on our case report as well as the literature and the mechanisms of hyperbaric oxygen, we make the recommendation that this therapy be considered as an addition to the multidisciplinary treatment of frostbite, even after significant delay of treatment.
