We conducted a needs assessment to identify knowledge gaps in the management of tropical diseases by Canadian emergency physicians and identify available, related continuing medical education (CME) resources. ⋯ Most Canadian emergency physicians have had minimal training in tropical diseases, reported a low comfort level in their management, and identified a high need for CME opportunities, which are lacking.

Pediatric musculoskeletal pain in the emergency department: a medical record review of practice variation.
Musculoskeletal (MSK) injuries are a common, painful pediatric presentation to the emergency department (ED). The primary objective of this study was to describe current analgesic administration practices for the outpatient management of children's MSK pain, both in the ED and postdischarge. ⋯ Documentation of the assessment and management of children's pain in the ED is poor, and pain management appears to be suboptimal. When provided, ibuprofen is the most common analgesic used for children with MSK pain. Pediatric patients with MSK pain do not receive timely medication, and interventions must be developed to improve the "door to analgesia" time for children in pain.

Comparison of access to services in rural emergency departments in Quebec and British Columbia.
Although emergency departments (EDs) in Canada's rural areas serve approximately 20% of the population, a serious problem in access to health care services has emerged. ⋯ The results suggest that major differences exist in access to support services in rural EDs in British Columbia and Quebec. A nationwide study is justified to address this issue of variability in rural and remote health service delivery and its impact on interfacility transfers and patient outcomes.

Clinical practice guidelines are an important vehicle for knowledge translation and improving patient care. For most learners, these documents can be daunting and confusing. ⋯ We devised a system using near-peer mentors to generate a series of clinical education guideline learning materials created by residents and junior learners for the evaluation of undifferentiated chest pain in the ED. This process assisted in teaching residents and junior learners and generated an endurable educational product.
