CAEP 2016 Academic Symposium: How to have an impact as an emergency medicine educator and scholar.
In a time of major medical education transformation, emergency medicine (EM) needs to nurture education scholars who will influence EM education practice. However, the essential ingredients to ensure a career with impact in EM education are not clear. ⋯ We describe a unique set of recommendations to develop educators who will influence EM, derived from a consensus from the EM community. EM leaders, educators, and aspiring educational scholars should consider how to implement this guide towards enhancing our specialty's educational mission.

Patients who are tobacco users present to the emergency department (ED) with many medical conditions that are causally or potentially causally related to smoking. Previous studies have shown increased cessation rates for patients who accurately perceive that their ED visit is smoking-related. Our study goals were 1) to determine the prevalence of potential smoking-related conditions among tobacco users at a tertiary care academic ED, and 2) to determine which medical conditions are more or less likely to be perceived by patients as smoking-related. ⋯ In this study, 13% of all ED visits among smokers were for a potential smoking-related condition, of which 38% were perceived by patients to be smoking-related. Education to increase awareness of smoking-related conditions may increase cessation rates.

Three are no clinical practice guidelines that specifically address the management of patients with iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in the emergency department (ED). The goal of this study was to describe the characteristics of IDA patients who present to the ED, documentation of IDA by emergency physicians, utilization of iron supplementation, and the appropriateness of red blood cell (RBC) transfusions ordered in the ED. ⋯ This assessment demonstrated that management of IDA patients presenting to the ED may represent an important knowledge-to-practice gap. It revealed that RBC transfusion may be over-utilized and could be replaced by safer, lower-cost alternatives such as intravenous and oral iron. Guidelines for management of IDA in the ED may be necessary to achieve consistent IDA management and avoid inappropriate use of RBC transfusion.
