The trochanteric nail versus the sliding hip screw for intertrochanteric hip fractures: a review of 93 cases.
The trochanteric nail, a redesigned short gamma nail, (Howmedica, Rutherford, NJ) was introduced in the United States during 1998 for the treatment of intertrochanteric fractures. ⋯ This study suggests that the trochanteric nail is a reasonable alternative to the sliding hip screw when used for intertrochanteric fractures, although it may be associated with higher complication rates.

Mountain biking has become an increasingly popular recreational and competitive sport with increasingly recognized risks. The purpose of this study was to review a population based approach to serious injuries requiring trauma center admission related to mountain biking, identify trends and develop directions for related injury prevention programs. ⋯ Mountain biking is a growing cause of serious injuries. Young males are principally at risk and serious injuries result from intended activity and despite protective equipment. Injury prevention programs were developed to address these concerns.

To validate the accuracy of the Revised Trauma Score (RTS) and its components for predicting in-hospital mortality. ⋯ The RTS in its present form does not accurately describe the relation of GCS, SBP, and RR to mortality. FP transformation would improve the accuracy of predicted survival probabilities used for performance evaluation and may improve control of confounding caused by of physiologic severity case mix in trauma research.

Despite broad clinical use of the American Association of the Surgery of Trauma (AAST) injury scale for kidney, it has only been found to predict the need for renal surgery in single institution series. We sought to validate this scheme for morbidity and mortality in a national cohort of patients with renal injury. ⋯ The AAST injury scale for kidney predicts for morbidity in blunt and penetrating renal injury and for mortality in blunt injury. Thus, we continue to support its use as a clinical and research tool.

The goal of this study was to evaluate the burden of falls in the elderly in a Canadian tertiary trauma center. ⋯ LVF is a frequent cause of admission for trauma in the elderly. Despite the apparent benign nature of the mechanism, LVF is associated with more severe injuries and worse outcome.
