Comparison of pre-PICU and per-PICU interventions, clinical features and neurologic outcomes of motor vehicle collision trauma and other mechanisms of trauma in children.
Motor vehicle collisions (MVCs) are the number one cause of death in the pediatric age group. The aim of this study was to determine the differences between MVCs and other trauma mechanisms (OTMs) in patients who were followed up at a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). ⋯ MVCs lead to more multiple trauma cases than OTMs. Invasive mechanical ventilation, inotropes, and other inten-sive care interventions were necessary much more often in MVC victims than in OTM patients.

Comparison of PECARN clinical decision rule and clinician suspicion in predicting intra-abdominal injury in children with blunt torso trauma in the emergency department.
The Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN) developed a clinical decision rule to identify children at low risk for intra-abdominal injury requiring acute intervention (IAI-I) for reducing unnecessary radiation exposure of ab-dominal computed tomography (CT) after blunt torso trauma. This study aimed to compare the PECARN decision rule with clinician suspicion in identifying children at low risk of intra-abdominal injuries that an abdominal CT scan can be safely avoided. ⋯ In this study, the PECARN abdominal rule and clinician suspicion performed similarly in identifying intra-abdominal injuries in children with blunt torso trauma. However, our study supports the use of PECARN abdominal rule in addition to clinical judgment to limit unnecessary abdominal CT use in pediatric patients with blunt torso trauma in the ED.

Pituitary apoplexy: An emergent and potential life-threatening complication of pituitary adenomas.
Pituitary apoplexy is an emergent and potential life-threatening complication of pituitary adenomas if not managed properly. The aim of our study is to present our series of pituitary adenomas and to focus on the clinical, radiological, and surgical characteristics of this rare complication. ⋯ Pituitary apoplexy is an important complication of pituitary adenomas. Early diagnosis and surgical intervention provide excellent ophthalmological and hormonal outcomes. Emergent EET approach is crucial for patients with ophthalmological findings and macroadenomas.

Pre-operative neutrophil/lymphocyte and platelet/lymphocyte ratios are effective in predicting complicated acute cholecystitis
Acute cholecystitis is a severe disease that requires urgent operation in some cases. To select suitable patients for a conservative approach, there is a need for an affordable and reliable marker for determining complication risk. Evaluation of systemic inflammatory markers in combination with other parameters such as white blood cell and the C-reactive protein might help to decide the appropriate treatment option. This study aims to evaluate the diagnostic value of the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and thrombocyte-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) in determining the risk of complicated acute cholecystitis and to compare with intraoperative and pathological findings. ⋯ Systemic inflammation markers can be used to predict the risk of complicated acute cholecystitis. They are inex-pensive tools that can be used to make surgical decisions, especially in resource scarce environments.

The predictive value of ischemia-modified albumin in the diagnosis of acute appendicitis: A prospective case-control study.
Surgical planning is critical for ongoing treatment and prognosis of the disease's course after an appendicitis diag-nosis. Ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) has been used as a biomarker for a variety of ischemia-related disorders in the past. The aim of this study is to determine the IMA level in patients with AA and to evaluate its predictive significance. ⋯ Our study shows that IMA values provide significant results in predicting acute appendicitis.
