Randomized Controlled TrialGinsenoside Rg3 inhibits HIF-1α and VEGF expression in patient with acute leukemia via inhibiting the activation of PI3K/Akt and ERK1/2 pathways.
Aberrant angiogenesis is essential to the development and progression of leukemia. Ginsenoside Rg3 has been commonly used in anti-angiogenic therapy of solid tumors. This study aimed to investigate the anti-angiogenic effects of Rg3 in patients with acute leukemia. ⋯ In addition, Rg3 treatment led to reduced serum levels of HIF-1α and VEGF in patients with acute leukemia. Mechanistically, we demonstrated that Rg3 downregulated the phosphorylation of Akt and ERK1/2 in BMSCs. In conclusion, Rg3 exhibits anti-leukemia effect in part due to its anti-angiogenic activity via inhibiting PI3K/Akt and ERK1/2 pathways, which act to regulate the expression of HIF-1α and VEGF.

Case ReportsMeningitis and pneumococcal pyomyositis in a child with intramuscular hemangiomas: an autopsy case report.
Pyomyositis is the bacterial infection of skeletal muscle, usually accompanied by abscesses. The main etiologic agent is Staphylococcus aureus. ⋯ The authors propose the hypothesis that patients with hemangiomas, mainly the intramuscular type, may also represent a risk group for pyomyositis. The possibility of respiratory/meningeal co-infection, might also be considered even if the clinical picture is restricted to the muscular system.

Comparative StudyLepidic and micropapillary growth pattern and expression of Napsin A can stratify patients of stage I lung adenocarcinoma into different prognostic subgroup.
Histologic categories and related growth pattern proposed by IASLC/ATS/ERS classification has been reported to be prognostically important in lung adenocarcinoma. Thyroid transcription factor-1 (TTF1) and Napsin A have been investigated as potential prognostic parameters with conflicting results. A total of 211 cases with stage I lung adenocarcinoma were analyzed according to the IASLC/ATS/ERS classification with slight modifications. ⋯ Negative TTF1 expression indicated increased risk of death, but failure in statistical significance (P=0.215). After multivariate analysis, histologic subtype, tumor size and gender were identified as independent predictor for DFS (RR: 0.343, 3.697, 0.494; P=0.006, 0.029, 0.019), no feature was found as an independent predictor for overall survival (P>0.05). To conclude, lepidic growth pattern, female sex and tumor size≤2 cm are independent favorable predictors for tumor recurrence, tumors with more than 5% percentage of lepidic growth pattern will have a better prognosis than absence, in early-stage lung adenocarcinoma.

Case ReportsMast cell leukemia with prolonged survival on PKC412/midostaurin.
Mast cell leukemia (MCL) is a rare and aggressive form of systemic mastocytosis. There are approximately 50 reported cases since 1950s. MCL is refractory to cytoreduction chemotherapy and the average survival is only six months. ⋯ Since then, her disease had been stably controlled. This is the first report of a high-tumor-load MCL case which achieved prolonged survival (101 months) by PKC 412. The 101-month overall survival is the longest among reported MCL cases in the English literature.

Study on different surgical approaches for acute Lumber disk protrusion combined with Cauda Equina Syndrome.
To compare the long and short term effectiveness and complications of different surgical approaches for Lumber disk protrusion combined with Cauda Equina Syndrome and find a better surgical method for the disease. In this study, follow up records of 144 patients received conventional laminectomy and minimally invasive decompression and fenestration 48 hours within acute injury of lumber disk protrusion combined with Cauda Equina Syndrome were analyzed. ⋯ The results indicated that there are no significant differences regarding age, sexual proportion, body mass index (BMI), visual analogue scale of pain (VAS) score as well as Frankel scores before the surgery, and significant differences VAS score as well as Frankel scores immediately after the surgery. In conclusion, minimally invasive decompression and fenestration can be of the same effectiveness and less complications comparing with the conventional laminectomy.
