Validation of the Nottingham Hip Fracture Score (NHFS) to predict 30-day mortality in patients with an intracapsular hip fracture.
The Nottingham Hip Fracture Score (NHFS) was developed to predict 30-day mortality following a fracture of the hip. While the NHFS has been validated in three hip fracture populations within Great Britain, these studies make no distinction between the type of fracture and surgery. Literature 'however' shows an increased risk for mortality after a hemi-arthroplasty following an intra-capsular hip fracture. To verify whether the mortality after an intra-capsular hip fracture is higher compared to the predicted mortality score according to the NHFS, a validation of the NHFS in patients with a hemi-arthroplasty after an intra-capsular hip fracture was performed. ⋯ Prognostic Level III, retrospective cohort study.

Multicenter StudyFunctional and socioprofessional outcome of surgery for Volkmann's contracture.
Volkmann's ischemic contracture is rare and surgical treatment remains a challenge. The goal of treatment is to obtain permanent recovery of joint range of motion and strength. The goal of this study was to evaluate the functional and socioprofessional outcome of surgical treatment of Volkmann's ischemic contracture. ⋯ IV, retrospective study.

Multicenter StudyAre French orthopedic and trauma surgeons affected by burnout? Results of a nationwide survey.
Burnout is a pathology that can affect care-giving professionals. It associates emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalization (DP) and impaired personal accomplishment (PA). Surgery entails great responsibility and frequently heavy workloads, incurring risk of burnout. Data, however, are not available for French orthopedic and trauma surgeons. We therefore conducted a prospective survey to 1) assess burnout prevalence in French orthopedic surgeons, and 2) investigate risk factors and protective factors. ⋯ Level IV, prospective descriptive transverse study without control group.

Is the Charlson comorbidity index a good predictor of mortality and adverse effects in proximal humerus fractures?
Proximal humerus fractures (PHF) are frequent in elderly patients. This population also suffers from a series of associated comorbidities, and PHF increases morbidity and mortality. The Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) is a tool used for calculating comorbidity and therefore the mortality risk. ⋯ IV, retrospective observational study.

Superior capsular reconstruction for irreparable supraspinatus tendon tears using the long head of biceps: A biomechanical study on cadavers.
The superior articular capsule complements the rotator cuff's function in shoulder stability. With irreparable rotator cuff tears, superior capsular reconstruction (SCR) improves dynamic glenohumeral (GH) joint kinematics. We present a novel method of SCR in cadaveric shoulders using the long head of bicep (LHB) tendon instead of previously explored fascia lata autograft, thereby reducing harvest site and suture anchor associated complications. ⋯ Basic science study, biomechanical testing.
