Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudySelf-directed deliberate practice with virtual fiberoptic intubation improves initial skills for anesthesia residents.
Fiberoptic intubation is a core skill in anesthesiology. However, this complex psychomotor skill is challenging to learn in the clinical setting. The goal of this study was to evaluate the Virtual Fiberoptic Intubation (VFI) software as an adjunct to the traditional fibreoptic intubation teaching. ⋯ Self-directed practice using VFI software may improve the initial acquisition of fibreoptic intubation skills for anesthesia residents.

Case ReportsAcute liver failure due to acute fatty liver of pregnancy.
Acute fatty liver of pregnancy (AFLP) is a rare but serious liver disease and typically occurs during the third trimester. It carries the risk for significant perinatal and maternal mortality. Therefore an early diagnosis and delivery, followed by close monitoring and optimized management of the impaired liver function with all associated problems are necessary to prevent maternal and foetal death. This case report focuses on the management of acute liver failure due to AFLP in a 31 year old women treated in our intensive care unit (ICU) after an emergency C-section.

Multicenter Study Clinical TrialCytochrome P450 polymorphism and postoperative cognitive dysfunction.
The etiology of postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) remains unclear but toxicity of anesthetic drugs and their metabolites could be important. We aimed to assess the possible association between POCD after propofol anesthesia and various phenotypes owing to polymorphisms in cytochrome P450 encoding genes. ⋯ Polymorphisms in CYP2C19, or 2D6 genes do not seem to be related to the occurrence of cognitive dysfunction after non-cardiac surgery in patients anesthetised with propofol.
