Preadmission Bisphosphonate and Mortality in Critically Ill Patients.
Increased bone resorption predicts mortality and bone resorption heightens during critical illness. Bisphosphonates are potent inhibitors of bone resorption. Whether bisphosphonate impacts clinical outcome of intensive care unit (ICU) admission is unknown. ⋯ Preadmission bisphosphonate use was associated with superior survival among critically ill patients. Prospective studies examining the effects of bisphosphonate in critical illness are required.

Clinical Trial Observational StudyEarly and Sustained Changes in Bone Metabolism After Severe Burn Injury.
Severe burn injury causes a massive stress response, consecutively heightened serum levels of acute phase proteins, cortisol, and catecholamines with accompanying disturbance in calcium metabolism. ⋯ Ongoing changes of BTM and regulators of bone metabolism suggest alterations in bone metabolism with a likely adverse influence on bone quality and structure in male patients with severe burn injuries.

Effects of Dosimetrically Guided I-131 Therapy on Hematopoiesis in Patients With Differentiated Thyroid Cancer.
The objective of the study was to evaluate the effects of dosimetrically guided I-131 prescribed activities on hematopoiesis reflected by changes in complete blood counts (CBCs). ⋯ Dosimetrically guided I-131 resulted in statistically significant decreases in CBC parameters, which were more prominent in WBCs and PLTs. Lymphocytes were more severely affected than ANCs, whereas all parameters reached a nadir at 1 month and then gradually returned toward baseline values over the 5-year follow-up of our study.

Randomized Controlled TrialVitamin D 20,000 IU per Week for Five Years Does Not Prevent Progression From Prediabetes to Diabetes.
Vitamin D deficiency is associated with insulin resistance and risk of future diabetes. ⋯ In subjects without vitamin D deficiency, vitamin D supplementation is unlikely to prevent progression from prediabetes to diabetes. Very large studies with inclusion of vitamin D-deficient subjects will probably be needed to show such a putative effect. This study tested if supplementation with vitamin D to subjects with prediabetes will prevent progression to type 2 diabetes (T2DM).

Hepatic Steatosis and Insulin Resistance, But Not Steatohepatitis, Promote Atherogenic Dyslipidemia in NAFLD.
Patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease, and atherogenic lipoproteins may play an important role. ⋯ NAFLD was associated with a worse atherogenic lipoprotein profile, regardless of similar body mass index and other clinical parameters. We speculate that this lipoprotein profile is driven mostly by liver fat content and insulin resistance and appears not to be worsened by obesity or the severity of liver disease (nonalcoholic steatohepatitis).
