Effect of propranolol on hypertonic saline-evoked masseter muscle pain and autonomic response in healthy women during rest and mental arithmetic task.
To investigate in a randomized, double-blinded, placebo controlled, crossover study the effect of a single dose of the nonselective β-adrenergic receptor antagonist propranolol (40 mg) on hypertonic saline (HS)-evoked masseter muscle pain and autonomic activity during rest and during a mental arithmetic task (Paced Auditory Serial Addition Task, PASAT). ⋯ A single dose of propranolol had no effect on acute HS-evoked pain levels during rest or during mental arousal. However, it influenced the tone of the autonomic nervous system, possibly reflecting an anxiolytic effect.

To conduct a systematic review of papers reporting the reliability and diagnostic validity of the joint vibration analysis (JVA) for diagnosis of temporomandibular disorders (TMD). ⋯ This literature is unable to provide evidence to support the reliability and diagnostic validity of the JVA for diagnosis of TMD.

Why seek treatment for temporomandibular disorder pain complaints? A study based on semi-structured interviews.
To identify potential predictors of self-reported sleep bruxism (SB) within children's family and school environments. ⋯ Aspects upon which care seekers differed from non-care seekers were mainly person-related characteristics. Next to these characteristics, it appeared that inadequate referrals may play a role in care seeking. The use of semi-structured interviews may further improve insights into processes that determine care seeking among people with TMD pain complaints.

Development of a quality-assessment tool for experimental bruxism studies: reliability and validity.
To combine empirical evidence and expert opinion in a formal consensus method in order to develop a quality-assessment tool for experimental bruxism studies in systematic reviews. ⋯ Qu-ATEBS, the seven-item evidence-based quality assessment tool developed here for use in systematic reviews of experimental bruxism studies, exhibits face validity, excellent discriminative validity, and acceptable inter-observer reliability. Development of quality assessment tools for many other topics in the orofacial pain literature is needed and may follow the described procedure.

Cutaneous mastocytosis (CM) has been associated with urticaria, itching, and pain of the affected regions. Although the occurrence of CM in the facial skin is rare, it may be a cause of chronic facial pain, and pain characteristics may mistakenly be interpreted as trigeminal nerve pathology. However, the dermatological appearance of the different variants of cutaneous mastocytosis is distinct and should be considered as an uncommon differential diagnosis in an orofacial pain diagnostic algorithm. This article presents a case of telangiectasia macularis eruptiva perstans, a rare type of cutaneous mastocytosis, as the underlying cause of chronic facial pain, erythema, and swelling.
