Glutamate-induced temporomandibular joint pain in healthy individuals is partially mediated by peripheral NMDA receptors.
To determine if glutamate injected into the healthy temporomandibular joint (TMJ) evokes pain through peripheral N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors and if such pain is influenced by sex or sex steroid hormones. ⋯ Glutamate evokes immediate pain in the healthy human TMJ that is partly mediated by peripheral NMDA receptors in the TMJ.

Effects of low-dose intramuscular ketorolac on experimental pain in the masseter muscle of healthy women.
To investigate the effect of a low dose of intramuscular (im) ketorolac compared with lidocaine (LA) in a double-blinded, randomized, and controlled trial. ⋯ A low dose of im ketorolac has a significant and immediate analgesic effect on HS-evoked jaw muscle pain but significantly less than LA. A local anesthetic-like effect may be the underlying mechanism.

Short-term effects of dry needling of active myofascial trigger points in the masseter muscle in patients with temporomandibular disorders.
To investigate the effects of dry needling over active trigger points (TrPs) in the masseter muscle in patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD). ⋯ The application of dry needling into active TrPs in the masseter muscle induced significant increases in PPT levels and maximal jaw opening when compared to the sham dry needling in patients with myofascial TMD.

Postoperative pain relief after surgical removal of impacted third molars: a single-blind, randomized, controlled study to compare levobupivacaine and mepivacaine.
To compare the efficacy of 0.75% levobupivacaine with that of 3% mepivacaine for pain control after surgical removal of impacted mandibular third molars. ⋯ Levobupivacaine is a valid alternative to traditional local anesthetics for surgical removal of lower third molars. It presents better pain relief when compared to mepivacaine in the immediate postoperative period as evidenced by lower VAS scores.

Randomized clinical trial of acupuncture for myofascial pain of the jaw muscles.
To evaluate the effectiveness of acupuncture in treating symptoms associated with myofascial pain of the jaw muscles. ⋯ A single acupuncture session using one acupoint at Hegu large intestine 4 significantly reduced most myofascial pain endpoints when compared to sham acupuncture.
