In our department, we have been using an Anesthesia Information Management System (AIMS) for five years. In this study, we tested to what extent data extracted from the AIMS could be suitable for the supervision and time-management of operating rooms. ⋯ In assessing the results of our study, it should be considered that the system used is not a specialized OR management tool. Despite these restrictions, the system contains data which can be used for an exact and relevant presentation of OR utilization.

a) The use of information technology (IT) based solutions for quality health delivery in regional health information networks and the study of the enabling factors for their use in a regional health care network from key classes of users such as the medical personnel and the citizens. b) Identification of potential technologies for usage from all citizens and health providers in a regional environment, in all aspects of everyday life. c) Presentation of a generic user model for reference when developing and assessing IT based health delivery solutions. ⋯ Although IT solutions are advanced and continue to evolve, still the user acceptance and user friendliness issues are unresolved. Mobile telecommunication solutions however may hold the key for wide scale implementation of IT solutions in regional health information networks and increased quality of health services.

The influence of methods for record keeping on the documentation of vital signs was assessed for the Anesthesia Information Management System (AIMS) NarkoData. We compared manually entered blood-pressure readings with automatically collected data. These data were stored in a data-base and subsequently evaluated and analyzed. ⋯ Blood-pressure readings of 37,726 data sets were analyzed. We could assess that the method of documentation did influence the data quality. It could not be assessed whether the incorrectness of data during automatic data gathering was caused by artefacts or by the anesthesiologist.

Tumor documentation is an important task for both clinical research and patient care. Documentation systems for these purposes have to be planned systematically and should be goal oriented. ⋯ The method proved to be helpful in both cases even though the resulting documentation protocols are completely different and although they served different objectives. Therefore, the aim of the paper is to motivate and help medical informatics professionals to systematically plan other documentation systems using this method.

We designed and evaluated a satellite-based Internet system for use in medical applications. Many experimental telemedicine projects use satellites, but we combined digital satellite communication with an ordinary telephone network to realize an economical countrywide network for emergency medicine and continuous medical education. The system appears to be a useful and practical technology for daily clinical activities.
