Attrition between the superior cavopulmonary connection and the Fontan procedure in hypoplastic left heart syndrome.
We investigated the incidence and predictors of failure to undergo the Fontan in children with hypoplastic left heart syndrome who survived superior cavopulmonary connection. ⋯ In this study spanning more than 3 decades, 8.3% of children with hypoplastic left heart syndrome failed to undergo the Fontan after superior cavopulmonary connection. This attrition rate has not decreased over 30 years. Use of a right ventricle to pulmonary artery shunt at the Norwood procedure was associated with increased attrition.

Multicenter StudyGender-related differences in patients with acute aortic dissection type A.
Acute aortic dissection type A can occur in both genders at any age. Our aim was to report differences in presentation, treatment, and outcome in female and male patients with acute aortic dissection type A. ⋯ Aortic dissection type A occurs almost twice as frequently in men. Women develop aortic dissection later in life. Despite women and men presenting at different ages and exhibiting varying dissection and malperfusion patterns, and the fact that men undergo complex proximal aortic repair more frequently, outcomes are similar in both genders.

Neuropilin-2b facilitates resistance to tyrosine kinase inhibitors in non-small cell lung cancer.
Innate and acquired resistance is the principle factor limiting the efficacy of tyrosine kinase inhibitors in lung cancer. We have observed a dramatic upregulation of the cell surface co-receptor neuropilin-2b in lung cancers clinically treated with tyrosine kinase inhibitors correlating with acquired resistance. We hypothesize that neuropilin-2b plays a functional role in acquired tyrosine kinase inhibitor resistance. ⋯ Neuropilin-2b facilitates non-small cell lung cancer resistance to tyrosine kinase inhibitors, and this biological effect relates to AKT activation. Neuropilin-2b GSK3β interactions appear to be essential for PTEN degradation and AKT activation in lung cancer cells. Disruption of the neuropilin-2b GSK3β interaction may represent a novel treatment strategy to preserve sensitivity to tyrosine kinase inhibitors in non-small cell lung cancer.
