Multicenter StudyFetal brain growth and risk of postnatal white matter injury in critical congenital heart disease.
To test the hypothesis that delayed brain development in fetuses with d-transposition of the great arteries or hypoplastic left heart syndrome heightens their postnatal susceptibility to acquired white matter injury. ⋯ Lower total brain volume beginning in late gestation is associated with increased risk of postnatal moderate-severe white matter injury in d-transposition of the great arteries but not hypoplastic left heart syndrome. Rate of brain growth was not a risk factor for white matter injury. The underlying fetal and perinatal physiology has different implications for postnatal risk of white matter injury.

Multicenter StudyCosts and consequences of acute kidney injury after cardiac surgery: A cohort study.
Acute kidney injury (AKI) is common after cardiac surgery. We quantified the mortality and costs of varying degrees of AKI using a population-based cohort in Alberta, Canada. ⋯ AKI remains an important indicator of mortality and health care costs postcardiac surgery.

Preoperative plasma biomarkers associated with atrial fibrillation after coronary artery bypass surgery.
Postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) is a common complication in coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) procedures. This prospective study aimed to investigate predisposition of proteins and metabolites correlated to POAF after CABG and related cellular pathways. ⋯ The present study for first time at multi-omics levels explored the mechanism of POAF and validated the results in a new cohort of patients, suggesting preexisting differential proteins and differential metabolites in the plasma of patients prone to POAF after CABG. Dysregulation of peroxisome proliferators-activated receptor α and glutathione metabolism pathways related to metabolic remodeling and redox imbalance-associated electrical remodeling may play a key role in the pathogenesis of POAF. Lower plasma phospholipid transfer protein, apolipoprotein-C3, higher cholesteryl ester transfer protein and glutathione peroxidase 3 levels are linked with POAF. These proteins/metabolites may be developed as biomarkers to predict POAF.
