Aortic root replacement with bicuspid valve reimplantation: Are outcomes and valve durability comparable to those of tricuspid valve reimplantation?
To assess intermediate-term outcomes of aortic root replacement with valve-sparing reimplantation of bicuspid aortic valves (BAV), compared with tricuspid aortic valves (TAV). ⋯ Both BAV and TAV reimplantations can be performed with equal safety and good midterm outcomes; however, the constellation of higher gradients, less ventricular reverse remodeling, and more aortic valve reoperations with BAV reimplantations raises concerns requiring continued long-term surveillance.

Venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation is a viable option as a bridge to heart transplant.
Venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation is a rescue therapy for patients in cardiogenic shock. We hypothesize that patients bridged to heart transplant with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation have decreased survival. ⋯ Recipients bridged with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation were estimated to survive 16.6 months less than nonmechanical circulatory support recipients. Bridge to heart transplant with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation is a viable option, and these patients should be considered transplant candidates.

Functional outcome after single-stage laryngotracheal reconstruction with rib cartilage grafting.
Single-stage laryngotracheal reconstruction (SSLTR) provides a definite surgical treatment for patients with complex glotto-subglottic stenosis. To date, the influence of SSLTR on the functional outcome after surgery has not been analyzed. ⋯ For complex glotto-subglottic stenoses, durable long-term airway patency together with reasonable voice quality and normal deglutition can be achieved by SSLTR.

The arterial switch operation (ASO) has excellent early outcomes in the modern era. We sought to determine the long-term outcomes in patients who underwent an ASO at a single institution. ⋯ Overall, survivors of ASO have excellent late survival and normal LV systolic function into adult life. However, AR and reoperation on the neoaortic valve remains an issue for older patients.
