Comparative StudyExtracorporeal life support in cardiogenic shock: Impact of acute versus chronic etiology on outcome.
The role of extracorporeal life support (ECLS) in primary cardiogenic shock (PCS) is well established. In this study, we evaluated the impact of etiology on outcomes. ⋯ In "chronic" heart failure, ECLS represents a bridge to a ventricular assist device or heart transplantation, whereas in "acute" settings, it offers a considerable chance of recovery, and is often the only required therapy.

Comparative StudySecond stage after initial hybrid palliation for hypoplastic left heart syndrome: Arterial or venous shunt?
Hybrid palliation for hypoplastic left heart syndrome has been developed as an alternative to neonatal Norwood surgery. At the second stage, a source of pulmonary blood flow has to be established. Options include an arterial modified Blalock-Taussig or a venous superior cavopulmonary shunt. ⋯ Both arterial and venous shunts are viable options with mortality and morbidity results comparable to those in the literature. The arterial shunt pathway (2-stage Norwood I) may offer better pulmonary arterial growth than the venous shunt (comprehensive/combined Norwood I and II).

Aortic arch geometry after the Norwood procedure: The value of arch angle augmentation.
Aortic arch reconstruction in the Norwood procedure is occasionally associated with postoperative airway and branch pulmonary artery stenosis, as well as recoarctation. This study investigated geometric changes in the aortic arch after the Norwood procedure and evaluated the efficacy of arch angle augmentation with glutaraldehyde-treated autologous pericardium in aortic arch reconstruction. ⋯ Arch angle augmentation with glutaraldehyde-treated autologous pericardium in the Norwood procedure creates more aortopulmonary space with a smoother arch angle and diminished incidence of postoperative recoarctation, bronchial compression, or branch pulmonary artery compression.

Clinical and biological significance of stem-like CD133(+)CXCR4(+) cells in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.
Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma is one of the most frequent malignant tumors. Cancer stem cells are considered to be responsible for tumor growth, metastasis, and recurrence. Cluster of differentiation 133 (CD133) and C-X-C chemokine receptor type 4 (CXCR4) are frequently applied markers for the identification and isolation of cancer stem cells. However, few studies have investigated the coexpression of CD133 and CXCR4 in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. This study aims to explore the clinical and biological role of stem-like CD133(+)CXCR4(+) cells in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. ⋯ Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma cells coexpressing CD133 and CXCR4 possess the characteristics of cancer stem cells. The concomitant high CD133-CXCR4 expression might be a novel marker for predicting the poor prognosis of patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, and CD133 and CXCR4 may serve as potential therapeutic targets.

Long-term outcomes after surgical repair of complete atrioventricular septal defect.
Survival after surgical repair for complete atrioventricular septal defect (CAVSD) has improved, but patients are at risk for reoperation to address left atrioventricular valve regurgitation and left ventricular outflow tract obstruction. We examined the long-term survival, need for reoperation, and associated risk factors after CAVSD repair at our institution. ⋯ Long-term survival after repair of CAVSD remains good. However, the need for reoperation is common and affects long-term survival after CAVSD repair.
