Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical Trial
Describing an episode of home nursing care for elderly postsurgical cancer patients.
While studies have documented the beneficial effect of home care for cancer patients, the actual interventions implemented during these studies have not been well described. ⋯ These nurses responded to complex problems and used a variety of interventions to assist patients and families in management of the illness experience. They also tailored their care to each patient's location along the illness trajectory. These findings provide beginning support for the clinical utility of Nursing Intervention Lexicon and Taxonomy as a way to quantify an episode of nursing care.

Dyspnea and the affective response during exercise training in obstructive pulmonary disease.
Dyspnea (SOB), dyspnea-related anxiety (DA), and exercise performance have been shown to improve after exercise training in patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). However, there are no published descriptions of the changes in dyspnea intensity or dyspnea-related anxiety during or across the exercise training sessions. ⋯ As theoretically proposed, both groups significantly decreased their DA over the training sessions. This decrease was early in the sessions and was not accompanied by a decrease in the SOB. In contrast, subjects maintained a nearly constant mean and peak SOB with increasing exercise performance, suggesting that people may have a dyspnea threshold above which they are unable to tolerate greater dyspnea. Description of the changes in dyspnea and the affective response during training need to be expanded, while studying the type and timing of strategies to enhance the improvement in dyspnea and dyspnea-related anxiety.

Psychosocial nursing therapy following sudden cardiac arrest: impact on two-year survival.
Although psychosocial therapy has been shown to reduce mortality after myocardial infarction, it is unknown whether the benefits of psychosocial therapy on mortality reduction extend to out-of-hospital sudden cardiac arrest, a main cause of cardiovascular mortality. ⋯ Psychosocial therapy significantly reduced the risk of cardiovascular death in sudden cardiac arrest survivors.

Dyspnea management in alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency: effect of oxygen administration.
A deficiency of alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT) can lead to pulmonary disease in middle-aged adults in whom dyspnea management can be a significant issue. ⋯ O2 administration may be useful for reducing dyspnea during exercise in selected populations.

The efficacy of developmentally sensitive interventions and sucrose for relieving procedural pain in very low birth weight neonates.
Procedural pain management for very low birth weight (VLBW) neonates has been minimal or nonexistent in most neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). ⋯ The most efficacious interventions for reducing pain from single painful events were the pacifier with sucrose and the pacifier with sterile water. Research on the efficacy and safety of implementing these interventions, alone and in combination, for repeated painful procedures is needed. In addition, research is needed on the influence of implementing these interventions on pain response and clinical outcomes (e.g., health status and neurodevelopmental status) in VLBW neonates in the NICU.
