The Quansys multiplex (Q-Plex) measures ferritin (Fer), soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR), C-reactive protein (CRP), α-1-acid glycoprotein (AGP), and retinol-binding protein (RBP). We compared Q-Plex results with reference-type assays and evaluated Q-Plex performance. Pearson correlation and Lin's concordance coefficients between the Q-Plex and reference assay were: Fer 0.98 and 0.91, sTfR 0.88 and 0.35, CRP 0.98 and 0.98, AGP 0.82 and 0.81, and RBP 0.68 and 0.31, respectively. ⋯ The Q-Plex measures multiple biomarkers simultaneously, is easy to perform, and uses small sample volumes. With some improvements in accuracy and precision (i.e., sTfR and RBP), this assay could be a useful tool for low-resource laboratories conducting micronutrient surveys for epidemiologic screening applications. These findings need to be verified using other populations, particularly those with inadequate micronutrient status.

While there are no national clinical guidelines for managing primary insomnia in Saudi Arabia, there are also no published studies of physicians' perceptions of and attitudes towards using international guidelines. The objective of this study was to explore the knowledge, perceptions, and attitudes of physicians practising in Saudi Arabia about using international guidelines for managing insomnia. ⋯ The health authorities in the government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) should improve general public awareness about sleep disorders and provide focused training for specialists and technologists. Above all, KSA needs its own nationwide guidelines for treating sleep-disorders based on evidence-based clinical trials, consistent with its history, culture, socioeconomic conditions and traditions.

Despite improvements in treatment for rheumatoid arthritis (RA), psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and spondyloarthritis (axSpA), several key unmet needs remain, such as fatigue. The objective of this study was to describe the severity of fatigue, disease characteristics and socioeconomic factors in people with RA, PsA and axSpA. ⋯ We found that the majority of the study population were fatigued (61%). They had low disease activity and few disease-related treatment changes.

Nursing or care home characteristics may have a long-term impact on the residents' mortality risks that has not been studied previously. The study's main objective was to assess the association between facility ownership and long-term, all-cause mortality. ⋯ These results are compatible with an association between factors related with the ownership of facilities and the long-term mortality risk of their residents. One of these factors, the facility size, could partly explain this association.

Professional sporting organisations invest considerable resources collecting and analysing data in order to better understand the factors that influence performance. Recent advances in non-invasive technologies, such as global positioning systems (GPS), mean that large volumes of data are now readily available to coaches and sport scientists. However analysing such data can be challenging, particularly when sample sizes are small and data sets contain multiple highly correlated variables, as is often the case in a sporting context. Multicollinearity in particular, if not treated appropriately, can be problematic and might lead to erroneous conclusions. In this paper we present a novel 'leave one variable out' (LOVO) partial least squares correlation analysis (PLSCA) methodology, designed to overcome the problem of multicollinearity, and show how this can be used to identify the training load (TL) variables that influence most 'end fitness' in young rugby league players. ⋯ The LOVO PLSCA technique appears to be a useful tool for evaluating the relative importance of predictor variables in data sets that exhibit considerable multicollinearity. When used as a filtering tool, LOVO PLSCA produced a MLR model that demonstrated a significant relationship between 'end fitness' and the predictor variable 'accumulated distance at very-high speed' when 'starting fitness' was included as a covariate. As such, LOVO PLSCA may be a useful tool for sport scientists and coaches seeking to analyse data sets obtained using GPS and MEMS technologies.
