In the early phase of the Covid-19 pandemic, mainly data related to the burden of care required by infected patients were reported. The aim of this study was to illustrate the timeline of actions taken and to measure and analyze their impact on surgical patients. ⋯ While allowing for maximal care of Covid-19 patients during the pandemic, the shift of resources limited the access to elective surgical care, with less impact on cancer care.

Angiopoietin (Angpt)-2, a permeability-increasing growth factor, is involved in vascular leakage of sepsis and acute lung injury, and could be released from endothelium in response to anaphylaxis-related secretagogues such as histamine and leukotrienes, or cytokines. However, roles of Angpt-2 in the hyperpermeability during systemic anaphylaxis are not known. Thus, we determined plasma levels of Angpt-2 and cytokines and vascular permeability during anaphylactic hypotension in unanesthetized rats. ⋯ Vascular permeability in bronchus, trachea, intestines, mesentery and skeletal muscle was increased at 10 min but not at 6 h after antigen. In addition, we confirmed using anesthetized rat anaphylaxis models that plasma Angpt-2 levels increased at 1 h after antigen. In conclusion, plasma Angpt-2 is elevated presumably due to increased cytokines and enhanced gene transcription during anaphylaxis in anesthetized and unanesthetized rats.

Assessing chronic pain is a challenge given its subjective dimension. In humans, resting state electroencephalography (EEG) is a promising tool although the results of various studies are contradictory. Spontaneous chronic pain is understudied in animals but could be of the highest interest for a comparative study. ⋯ Moreover, elevated back tension was positively correlated with the frequency of stereotypic behaviours (an "addictive- like" repetitive behavior) performed by the horses in their stall. Resting state quantitative EEG appears therefore as a very promising tool that may allow to assess individual subjective chronic pain experience, beyond more objective measures of tension. These results open new lines of research for a multi-species comparative approach and might reveal very important in the context of animal welfare.

Cancer awareness campaigns aim to increase awareness of the potential seriousness of signs and symptoms of cancer, and encourage their timely presentation to healthcare services. Enhanced understanding of the prevalence of symptoms possibly indicative of cancer in different population subgroups, and associated general practitioner (GP) help-seeking behaviour, will help to target cancer awareness campaigns more effectively. ⋯ Symptoms possibly indicative of cancer are common among adults aged 50+ years in the UK, although they are not evenly distributed. Help-seeking responses to different symptoms also vary. Our results suggest important opportunities to provide more nuanced messaging and targeting of symptom-based cancer awareness campaigns.

Implementing daily chlorhexidine gluconate treatment for the prevention of healthcare-associated infections in non-intensive care settings: A multiple case analysis.
Daily bathing with chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) in hospitalized patients reduces healthcare-associated bloodstream infections and colonization by multidrug-resistant organisms. Achieving compliance with bathing protocols is challenging. This non-intensive care unit multicenter project evaluated the impact of organizational context on implementation of CHG and assessed compliance with and healthcare workers' perceptions of the intervention. ⋯ Organizations planning to implement CHG treatments in non-ICU settings should ensure organizational readiness and buy-in and consider delivering systematic and ongoing training. Clear and systematic implementation policies across patients and units may help reduce potential confusion about treatment practices and variation across HCWs. Patient populations and unit factors need to be carefully considered and procedures developed to manage unique challenges.
