Association of timing, duration, and intensity of hyperglycemia with intensive care unit mortality in critically ill children.
To study the association of timing, duration, and intensity of hyperglycemia with pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) mortality in critically ill children. ⋯ Hyperglycemia is common in critically ill children. Peak BG and duration of hyperglycemia are independently associated with mortality in our PICU. A prospective, randomized trial of strict glycemic control in this subset of critically ill children who are at high risk of mortality is both warranted and feasible.

Identifying children at high risk for psychological sequelae after pediatric intensive care unit hospitalization.
To identify those patients in a pediatric intensive care unit who may be at highest risk for developing persistent psychological sequelae after hospital discharge. ⋯ Findings suggest there is a group of children in the pediatric intensive care unit who are at higher risk for developing persistent psychological sequelae postdischarge. Exposure to high numbers of invasive procedures may be the driving force behind group differences, particularly at 6 wks postdischarge. These children warrant closer observation and follow-up.

Congenital neurodevelopmental diagnoses and an intensive care unit: defining a population.
To identify and describe the population of children with congenital or perinatally acquired neurodevelopmental diagnoses in a pediatric intensive care unit and to assess the nature and extent of their utilization of critical care resources. ⋯ Children with congenital or perinatally acquired neurodevelopmental diagnoses represented nearly one quarter of all pediatric intensive care unit admissions at a tertiary academic center. This population has substantial ongoing medical needs, requiring utilization of intensive care resources. More rigorous investigations are needed to determine the effect of this burgeoning population in pediatric critical care, to optimize their care, and to meet the comprehensive needs of their families.

Factors contributing to successful discontinuation from inhaled nitric oxide therapy in pediatric patients after congenital cardiac surgery.
To investigate variables that contribute to successful discontinuation from inhaled nitric oxide (iNO) therapy in children after surgical repair of congenital heart disease. ⋯ Longer continuation (>72 hrs) and lower final concentration (<2 ppm) represent factors contributing to successful discontinuation of iNO therapy in pediatric patients after cardiac surgery, specifically for children with left-to-right shunt correction.

Possible risk factors associated with moderate or severe airway injuries in children who underwent endotracheal intubation.
To analyze the role of risk factors associated with moderate or severe airway injuries in children who underwent endotracheal intubation. ⋯ We concluded that to prevent morbidity secondary to airway injury, efforts should be directed to avoid reintubation and tube changes in the concerned scenario.
