Cardiac Function and Ventricular Interactions in Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn.
The aim of this study was to use a comprehensive imaging protocol to identify echocardiographic correlations of right and left ventricular size, function, and hemodynamics in neonates with persistent pulmonary hypertension of newborn and describe their relationship with key clinical variables. ⋯ Persistent pulmonary hypertension of newborn is characterized by global cardiac dysfunction, involving both the right and left ventricles, with significant interventricular functional correlation. Cardiac dysfunction early in disease course may identify patients at highest risk of adverse outcome.

The Association of Laboratory Test Abnormalities With Mortality Risk in Pediatric Intensive Care.
To determine the bivariable associations between abnormalities of 28 common laboratory tests and hospital mortality and determine how mortality risks changes when the ranges are evaluated in the context of commonly used laboratory test panels. ⋯ The relative importance of laboratory test ranges vary widely, with some ranges strongly associated with mortality and others strongly associated with survival. When evaluated in the context of test panels rather than isolated tests, the mortality odds ratios for the test ranges decreased but generally remained significant as risk was distributed among the components of the test panels. These data are useful to develop critical values for children in ICUs, to identify risk factors previously underappreciated, for education and training, and for future risk score development.

Observational StudyCandidemia Diagnosis With T2 Nuclear Magnetic Resonance in a PICU: A New Approach.
Early diagnosis of invasive Candida infections is a challenge for pediatricians, intensivists, and microbiologists. To fill this gap, a new nanodiagnostic method has been developed using manual application of T2 nuclear magnetic resonance to detect Candida species. The aim of this study was to evaluate, prospectively, the usefulness as a tool diagnosis of the T2Candida panel in pediatric patients admitted at the PICU compared with blood culture. ⋯ T2Candida might be useful for the diagnosis of candidemia in PICUs. The prevalence of candidemia might be underestimated in this pediatric population. The use of this diagnostic tool in these units may help clinicians to start adequate and timely antifungal treatments.

Feasibility of Family-Assisted Severity of Illness Monitoring for Hospitalized Children in Low-Income Settings.
To determine the feasibility of having caregivers assist in recognition of clinical deterioration in children hospitalized with febrile illness in a resource-limited setting. ⋯ Caregiver involvement in recognition of critical illness in hospitalized children in low-resource settings may be feasible. This may facilitate earlier detection of clinical deterioration where staffing is severely limited by constrained resources. Further validation of the Family-Assisted Severe Febrile Illness Therapy tool is warranted, followed by its application in a larger multisite patient population to assess provider response and associated clinical outcomes.

Modification of Pediatric Sequential Organ Failure Assessment Score Using Acute Kidney Injury Diagnostic Criteria.
To develop a modified pediatric Sequential Organ Failure Assessment score using the acute kidney injury diagnostic criteria and evaluate its performance in predicting mortality. ⋯ Acute kidney injury is prevalent and associated with poor clinical outcomes in critically ill children. The modified pediatric Sequential Organ Failure Assessment score, based on the acute kidney injury diagnostic criteria, showed improved performance in predicting PICU mortality. The modified pediatric Sequential Organ Failure Assessment score could be a promising prognostic factor for critically ill children.
