To test the hypothesis that compliance with a hospital protocol on peripheral blood culture (PBC) collection in adults is associated with a reduction in PBC contamination, and to investigate likely contributing factors for contamination. ⋯ Compliance with a hospital protocol on PBC collection technique in adults significantly reduces blood culture contamination.

To analyse the contributions of the 15 primary member states of the European Union and selected non-European countries to pathological research between 2000 and 2006. ⋯ Results mirror the leading role of the USA in pathology research but also show the relevance of European scientists. The scientometric approach in this study provides a new fundamental and comparative overview of pathology research in the European Union and the USA which could help to benchmark scientific output among countries.

Forkhead box A1 (FOXA1) is a forkhead family transcription factor expressed in breast cancer cells. It is essential for optimal expression of approximately 50% of oestrogen receptor (ER)-related genes. This study explored the FOXA1 relationship with luminal and basal breast cancer subtypes, proliferation markers, and survival in breast cancer patients who had received similar treatment. ⋯ Based on this study in patients treated with surgery followed by adjuvant anthracycline-based chemotherapy, FOXA1 expression is associated with good prognosis. It correlates with luminal subtype breast cancer, and could possibly serve as a clinical marker for luminal subtype A. Prognostic ability of FOXA1 in these low-risk breast cancers may prove to be useful in treatment decision making.

During the past 10 years, multitarget fluorescence in situ hybridisation has been established as a valuable adjunct in the cytological diagnosis of precancerous and malignant lesions of the urinary tract. The aim of the present study was to define its value in detecting chromosomal imbalances in patients with various flat urothelial lesions in routine paraffin-embedded bladder biopsy samples. In addition, the HER2 gene amplification and HER2 expression pattern were examined, since alterations of the HER2 expression patterns have been demonstrated in invasive bladder cancer. ⋯ UroVysion fluorescence in situ hybridisation is a valuable tool for the detection of genetically unstable flat urothelial lesions, and can help to resolve difficult cases, particularly the differential diagnosis of reactive atypia and dysplasia.
