Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical Trial
Inflammatory markers and physical function among older adults with knee osteoarthritis.
To investigate whether serum concentrations of various inflammatory markers are associated with physical function and disease severity among older obese adults with knee osteoarthritis (OA). ⋯ Especially high levels of the soluble receptors of TNF-alpha were found to be associated with lower physical function, increased OA symptoms, and worse knee radiographic scores in older obese adults with knee OA.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Comparative Study Clinical Trial
Comparison of the analgesic efficacy and safety of nonprescription doses of naproxen sodium and Ibuprofen in the treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee.
To compare the analgesic efficacy and safety of nonprescription doses of naproxen sodium, ibuprofen, and placebo in patients with osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee. ⋯ Over-the-counter doses of naproxen sodium (440/660 mg) and ibuprofen (1200 mg) effectively relieve pain in patients with mild to moderate OA of the knee. Naproxen sodium provided more effective pain relief for most variables compared with placebo, and for night pain compared with ibuprofen. Efficacy was combined with good safety and tolerability.

Pneumococcal vaccine response in psoriatic arthritis patients during treatment with etanercept.
Therapeutics used to treat inflammatory diseases, including psoriatic arthritis (PsA), may potentially interfere with normal immune system function. Immune system function can be assessed by evaluating response to vaccination. We assessed the ability of patients with PsA treated with etanercept to produce antibodies in response to pneumococcal antigen challenge. ⋯ Patients with PsA treated with etanercept were able to produce antibodies in response to pneumococcal vaccination. Patients receiving MTX had lower mean antibody levels in response to the vaccine. There was no increased risk of poor response with etanercept treatment given alone or with MTX.

No effect of antiviral (valacyclovir) treatment in fibromyalgia: a double blind, randomized study.
To investigate the effect of an antiviral compound, valacyclovir, on pain and tenderness in patients with the fibromyalgia (FM) syndrome. ⋯ Valacyclovir cannot be recommended as a therapy for FM at this point.

Efficacy and safety of 5% ibuprofen cream treatment in knee osteoarthritis. Results of a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study.
To investigate the efficacy and safety of a cream containing 5% ibuprofen (Dolgit) cream) in primary knee osteoarthritis (OA) in a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, parallel-group study using an adaptive sequential design. ⋯ The efficacy and safety of ibuprofen cream in treatment of primary knee OA were statistically significant and clinically relevant compared to placebo.
