Fibromyalgia--are there different mechanisms in the processing of pain? A double blind crossover comparison of analgesic drugs.
Pain was analyzed in patients with fibromyalgia (FM) in a randomized, double blind, crossover study using intravenous (i.v.) administration of different drugs. ⋯ FM diagnosed according to the American College of Rheumatology criteria seems to include patients with different pain processing mechanisms. A pharmacological pain analysis with subdivision into responders and nonresponders might be considered before instituting therapeutic interventions or research.

A multicenter, randomized, double blind study comparing lornoxicam with diclofenac in osteoarthritis.
To compare the efficacy and tolerability of lornoxicam and diclofenac in the treatment of patients with osteoarthritis (OA) over 12 weeks and to assess the efficacy and tolerability of lornoxicam over a followup period of 40 weeks. ⋯ Lornoxicam 4 mg tid and 8 mg bid were as effective as diclofenac 50 mg tid for the treatment of OA. There was no significant difference in tolerability of these regimens. Thus, lornoxicam appears to be a useful therapeutic alternative to diclofenac in patients with OA.

The efficacy and tolerability of aceclofenac in the treatment of patients with ankylosing spondylitis: a multicenter controlled clinical trial. Aceclofenac Indomethacin Study Group.
To evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of aceclofenac, a new nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug, in patients with active ankylosing spondylitis (AS). ⋯ Aceclofenac and indomethacin did not differ with respect to efficacy in the treatment of active AS, although aceclofenac was slightly better tolerated.

Cognitive-educational treatment of fibromyalgia: a randomized clinical trial. I. Clinical effects.
This randomized controlled clinical trial evaluates the effectiveness of outpatient group cognitive/educational treatment for patients with the fibromyalgia (FM) syndrome. We hypothesized that the combination of group education with cognitive treatment aimed at developing pain coping skills would be more effective than group education alone. ⋯ The surplus value of a highly structured, 12 session group cognitive treatment added to group education cannot be supported by our study. In EDI, fear reduction might have enhanced pain coping and pain control, while poor compliance, the difficulty of homework assignments, and lack of individual support may have limited the effectiveness of ECO.

The effect of zolpidem in patients with fibromyalgia: a dose ranging, double blind, placebo controlled, modified crossover study.
This dose ranging, double blind, placebo controlled, modified crossover study examined whether zolpidem would improve the disturbed sleep, fatigue, mood and pain symptoms in patients with fibromyalgia (FM). ⋯ Short term treatment with zolpidem (5 to 15 mg) does not affect the pain of FM, but is useful for sleep and daytime energy in this patient population.
